Foreign male beggar?

Postby TimeTraveler » Wed May 23, 2018 1:52 pm

I was in Phnom Penh the weekend of May 9. On Sunday evening, I was in the park opposite the royal palace when I was approached by a clean cut, foreign white male in his mid 30's who asked if I had any spare money to give him. No reason was provided. It all seemed suspicious as he wasn't wearing tattered clothes or appear dirty. In any event, I waved him off and he left quickly. I watched him as he disappeared down the riverside passing other foreigners, yet I was the only foreigner he approached.

Are you familiar with this guy?

Street scammers usually can spot ones they victimize and ones they cannot. But for ones with pity hearts (guilty as one) would fall for it as they act pity. For visitors to countries like Southeast Asia, a dollar or 2 is not much when you are traveling. If they approach you for money, throw them a question or 2 if they struggled to answer them just buy them a 3000 riel pork with rice or the equivalence.

Good point. People often talk about a place and how much they've been scammed, and it says more about them than anything. Naive folk.

Isn't that the gay pick-up area? (er..or so I hear..)

Maybe he couldn't pluck up the courage to ask for a shafting and settled for loose change instead.

Early May a guy fitting this description approached us at a riverside cafe, he offered to sell his small backpack for $10 as he had just 'been ripped off $2000 by a hooker' and needed a room for the night. Well dressed and drunk. As he was waved off he muttered 'fuck you too'.
Never mind.

Yeah, there's not enough "tattoo of lady in glass on left bicep", "missing part of right earlobe", "Smoked Gauloises and wore Jack Purcells with no socks", "spat through yellowed broken teeth", "had a very smart Adidas tracksuit", etc in the description. Way too vague.
