England World Cup squad's 'patriotic' M&S suits were made in Cambodia

Postby Bong Burgundy » Wed Jun 13, 2018 6:08 am

England’s football team flew out to the World Cup on Tuesday, kitted out in a patriotic Marks & Spencer suit.... made in Cambodia.

The England players wore the official £264 suit for the team photograph before taking a flight to St Petersburg. The tournament starts on Thursday with England’s first match against Tunisia on Monday.

M&S had proudly trumpeted the suit’s design, with red, white and blue trim and proudly boasted that the pure merino wool was woven at the Alfred Brown mill in Yorkshire.

The M&S website does not disclose where the suit is made. Customers might feel a little upset to discover it is made in Cambodia. The M&S website states: “Complete with jacket, trousers and waistcoat, this suit is carefully crafted from luxurious, 100% Merino wool woven in England by Alfred Brown, for a modern, streamlined silhouette that’s sure to make an impression at your next formal event.”

M&S repeatedly refused to say where the suit was made. Asked four times by the Telegraph where it was manufactured, a spokesman repeatedly answered: “The fabric is woven by Alfred Brown mill in Yorkshire.”

In the end, the Telegraph dispatched a journalist to investigate the labelling of suits being sold in M&S stores.

A spokesman then confirmed that the suit was made abroad. “We’ve been the official tailor to the England team for 11 years and the suit has always been manufactured abroad which allows us to offer our customers the best value for money," the store said.

"We always clearly display for our customers where the product is made on the care label – in this case Cambodia. We’re very proud the wool is woven by British supplier Alfred Brown – a longstanding supplier of M&S.”

Nigel Farage, the former Ukip leader, said: "We have forgotten to stand up for our own people and take more pride in our own workmanship."

I actually came across this article in the BBC the other day, from 2016: Can an English suit be made in Cambodia?

I thought this graphic was especially interesting:

What a douschebag. Not everyone can afford (nor needs) a Savile Row Suit, and M&S is still a British company, using fabric woven in the U.K.

I believe that M&S mens suits in Cambodia are made by a company called Quantum, which used to be a British company, but was bought out by the Japanese a few years ago.

Quantum only made shirts and ladies underwear. The suit makers are a company called Dewhurst not to be confused with the high street butchers of the same name.
