PP's Expat Community Blows My Mind
PP's Expat Community Blows My Mind
Hello,
I have been here for a little over a year (really feels like a decade). Got priced out of LA and SD counties so I figured that instead of moving to a less desirable part of the state (Stockton, Bakersfield, and other dream destinations) where it's cheaper, why not discover something new and move to Asia? Why not meet more like-minded people instead of hanging out with the "bros" by the beach?
Cambodia as a whole is ok, I guess. It's a third-world country, so unlike a lot of my fellow expats, it really doesn't bother me that there aren't any In-n-Outs, drive-in ATMs, or cashback at the cash register. What truly grinds my gears is not the local population and its culture (I actually find them somewhat charming), it's the expat community (yes, here is the generalization you were all waiting for).
So far, the expats I've met are either bat s**t crazy (ex)felons, or self-centered, obnoxious wannabe hipsters spending the vast majority of their time on Street 308... Do we all become one or the other after spending too much time here? Jail sucks, but so do overalls and French mustaches.
I was told by people back home that Cambodian people were brain dead and lacked common sense. I've actually met more interesting locals than expats (statistically speaking, it kind of makes sense you'd say).
Last question: why are there so many expats dying in Cambodia? I understand that drugs, alcohol, and ladies working in sales and marketing are readily available here, but the same trifecta is also easily accessible in TJ, yet a busload of foreigners (exaggerated figure, of course) doesn't die every weekend.
Anyway. I'm crawling back into my cave. Peace

The expats you encounter entirely depends on where you hang out. A grizzled expat might generalise...
Toul Tumpoung: NGO folks & TEFLers
Ballsack Lane: Hipsters & 40y+ dudes pretending to be in their 20s & the French.
Pontoon/Vito nightclubs: 40y+ dudes pretending to be in their 20s. 30y+ dudes fishing for some end of night action without paying. 20y+ dudes on holiday fishing for some end of night action without paying.
St.104/130/136: All aged dudes fishing for some action on a budget.
Business association events: Same old dudes every event trying to avoid each other's dull tales.
Sports Bars: Australians in wife-beaters.
Toul Kork: Loaded studs with big cocks & pre-backpacker invasion stories to tell. (allegedly)
Provinces: Old dudes with pre-backpacker invasion stories to tell.

I thought that the Hipsters, and other Expat 2.0 Bellends, had started taking over TTP as well as BallSackSpigzy wrote:The expats you encounter entirely depends on where you hang out. A grizzled expat might generalise...

Chhbar Ampov is the new Toul Kok
All the rest seem about right, give or take.

I avoid the expat community for the most part, and I've been quite happy. I get on forums now and then for English news updates but that's it.
That being said, Bakersfield is a total shithole compared to here.

I was gonna check out Sen Sok, get away from it all, take a bus to old town to get wasted few times a month, that's all. I am done with the traditional 'expat' lifestyle in Phnom Penh. It's turning into a joke.

There are delightful expats here, but you're not going to find the cream of the crop in any demographic to be as highly visible as the dregs who are loud in speech and dress. Its the same anywhere.
Dear Lord Baby Jesus, Lyin in a Manger.
Street 308 AKA Ballsack Lane... The more you know.slavedog wrote:Me neither - is that Ballsack?logos wrote:What's the deal with street 308 ? Never heard of itobnoxious wannabe hipsters spending the vast majority of their time on Street 308..
@RickyBobby You're right. It's everywhere the same. I have to say though, I really feel like Cambodia doesn't attract A grade expats... (I do not consider myself an A grade expat either. Let's be real).
@newnewnewbie Could you define "traditional expat lifestyle" please? I'm just trying to figure out what I am doing wrong, or right.
@SlowJoe You're tripping... Barkesfield is prime! The greyhound station, the meth heads, the meth labs, the heat, the abandoned storefronts... did I mention the meth heads?
@Spigzy Thanks a bunch for the breakdown! Very general indeed, but accurate.
I always liked meeting people from different places with different backgrounds. Some were lovely and some were dicks. The hipster types were only just starting to arrive when I was on my way out. i don't think it was the good old days, just different then. Some of the people I met over there over ten years I will never forget and am always curious where they ended up. I lived very deeply there and have lost a little of that upon moving back.

I love bitches n gonna fuck Texas and the USA+ right up their god damn ass! Hallelujah!
The place with cassette tapes around the door is pure hipster. The bar next to it called Havana is good. I think they’re open throughout the whole festival.spitthedog wrote:I liked that stack of bars next to the FCC last time i wad in The Penh mostly for the view.
