Traffic police checkpoint map
Traffic police checkpoint map
If anyone knows of any more spots where the police like to set up personal income generation schemes and would like to include said locations on this map; post them here and I'll update it.
Information such as whether anyone was stopped for no reason, actually broke a traffic law (even unknowingly), whether the police were violent, how many police were there, how much the "fine" was, etc. would give a little extra flavour.

Street 136 (one way) where it joins Norodom Blvd is another regular checkpoint.
The police there have been known to be violent on one occasion…
At the St 63 and Sihanouk Blvd (one way) checkpoint I was fined 2,000r - after a little haggling
Intersection of Norodom and Mao Tse Tung stopped for turning right on a red light, no fine, just a warning.

I was stopped on monivong on my moto for having my light on by accident. They didn't really care about the light but showed me a bunch of cambodian licences and asked me if I had one. Of course I didn't so they fined me 20 bucks. It was only after, that someone told me you don't need a licence for driving a moto and giving 20 bucks to a cop is outrageous. They asked for 50 first but that's just crazy.
When I was there last time the Police had a fairly permanent abode at the roundabout next to the Monivong Bridge. They seemed to be amking a bit of a killing so I am sure they are still there.
Can somebody explain to me what is going on with every truck and van passing reil out the windows to the coppers. They werent evern stopping them it was just a fully accepted practice. Every truck and van did it.

That checkpoint is just for checking commercial vehicles coming into Phnom Penh from route 1, I think the passenger mini-buses are supposed to unload on the other side of the bridge so they have to pay for going past.LeePee wrote:When I was there last time the Police had a fairly permanent abode at the roundabout next to the Monivong Bridge. monivong and sihanouk traffic lights (heading north). Not always there but can often be seen hiding behind trees nr where BB world used to be.
I heard from a Kampot minibus driver that minibuses that don't have PP licence plates are fined by the police in PP, usually someone jumps out of the bus and puts 1000r or so in a bag or helmet hanging near the police.LeePee wrote: Can somebody explain to me what is going on with every truck and van passing reil out the windows to the coppers. Combining a couple of threads here but...
trying to buy some friends huh?
Mate you have no idea how much to pay a cop, yet you seem to know the going rate for a model????
Next time don't stop or if you do, just ride off.
Good luck when you get to Cambo, your going to need it (or a big bank balance ... alternatively just keep underpaying those models... )
cheers,
LaudJohn
PS I admire you for actually admitting thishappened
PPS I just told Mrs LaudJohn what you paid and she shook her head and said you were a Barang with too much money; and she told me to tell you what I just have, ... don't stop or ride off.

Just to let you know. (and to be my usual helpful self).gankobakoba wrote:I was stopped on monivong on my moto for having my light on by accident. Driving during the daytime with your headlight/s on is illegal unles you are royalty or a big wig.
Driving at nights without headlights is not illegal.
The fine for this should not be more tha $1, and more like 2000 riel.
Also only have your bike key in the ignition as they are wont to try and take the key out after they pull you over. Having another bike key in your pocket can enable you to just leave when they turn their heads...
Alternatively you could try punching the cop like a certain moderator here did (I suggest you don't anger him).
Otherwise just insist that thye take you to the police station and call the Embassy.. (they will probably settlefor a lesser amount as they will loose valuable "fine collecting time").
Remember whn negotiating fines, alays smile and be polite (unless you intend punching them and in that case make sure you have a key in the ignition)
cheers,
LaudJohn

Phnom Penh. Rules. No

Phnom Penh; rules? Ahh, that works.
Dancingroads, I think that those police were there to catch southbound travelers that turned left onto Sihanouk, and also the ones that went past the junction and down the hill to loop around the concrete barrier to go back to the same junction. There is a traffic signal there now, so left turning is ok. I haven't seen any police there since the new signal was installed.

nah, I go that way every day... they're not there all the time but pretty regularly...
heading north they wait about halfway between the traffic lights and the road behind Lucky's i.e. definitely for catching people coming from the south. My other half has also been stopped there.... You're thinking of the ones who used to stand actually on Sihanouk in front of BB world...
