dentists?
Wondering if anyone on here has any recommendations for a good, reasonably priced and PAIN FREE!! (yes I'm a big girl's blouse and need a local for fillings) dentist for simple stuff like fillings etc?
Also on the subject are there any dentists here that I could trust to even go near my wisdom teeth or is that just plain stupid? Recommendations from anyone who has had any 'large' procedure here ( ie anything other than cleaning/fillings) would be appreciated (again, anaesthetised up to the eyeballs please)
Cheers,
DR

The French place on Norodom is absolutely to a Western European standard with French dentists etc. I had some some horrible root canal problems which they fixed professionally - but it wasn't cheap.
Otherwise I hear that 'Smile' is OK and much cheaper. It's behind the palace and has a Khmer dentist trained in New Zealand.

Ive been to Smile a couple of times and they seem good. For a huge filling, that was like most of a tooth and a clean it was about $50.
Well you aren't exactly well informed.I hear that Khmer dentists charge $5 per metal tooth. I also hear that pulling teeth and replacing them with metal ones is all they know how to do.

We are using IMI to insert a post and crown for my wife. We have chosen them over Thai dentists for convenience and also due to good recommendations.
We had the post put in the other week, H\he made us wait a couple more months until the mouth was ready (he let us walk away from $1,500 in dentistry) which impressed me. Also his equipment is the same as in any Dentist in OZ and his surgery is spotless.
Khoot My is the man to deal with there; European trained.
As for wisdom teet extraction; that is surgery and my wife needs hers out soon. I have decided to get them pulled in Melbourne (cost $1,500) as opposed to Thailand (cost $200) or Cambodia due to the fact that she will be under a General anastethic and if anything goes wrong I want a real hospital nearby.
Personally I would opt for Thailand over Cambodia for surgery. You will not feel like travelling for a fews days afterwards so there will be hotel bills to contend with.
cheers

Personally, I would never get a wisdom tooth out here, because I have no faith in the skill of the surgeons.
I HIGHLY recommend Bumrumgrad Hospital in Bangkok for dental needs. They are ridiculously cheap, and have INTERNATIONAL quality service. And Im not saying liek a Cambodian who has spent 2 weeks training in Russia. They had a documentary on the hospital on National Geographic a while ago, and this hospital not only has the most up to date technology and training programs but actually exceeds specialist skills in most western countries, and is on par with the US with regards to adopting the latest techniques and technology.
They have a special department for dealing with foreigners, everyone speaks English, Thai friendliness, and the efficiency of the hospital will just blow your mind. Everything is organised to the smallest detail.
Ive spoken to the staff there who say that the costs of the hospital dentistry is higher than local Thai dentists, but the service is much better. Still, compared with anywhere else, the price is ridiculously cheap.
People with major operations fly across the world to get work done in this hospital, because even after the cost of their travel, a 2 week holiday in Thailand, the cost of their surgery, it is still cheaper than getting it done in their own country.
I've had 3 wisdom teeth taken out, all impacted, in Oz and after they put me under the last words I heard was "Hello, Im your dentist. My student will be conducting this surgery today and I will supervise", then I went out. The more invasive and rough the dentist is, the more swelling and pain you will have afterwards. My head looked like a swollen football.
For peace of mind I recommend Bumrungrad. You will need to stay at least overnight, possibly 2 nights, because they dont recommend you getting back on a plane because the pressure can start the bleeding again. You can stay at the hospital (rooms are about $50-$100/night, depending on what you want), or book into the nice 5-star Dusit Thani, a 5 minute taxi ride away for $100/night. Return airfare booked through local travel agent $120.
Check out their site, you'll see what I mean...

If you have impacted wisdom teeth, definitely dont get it done in Cambodia. There is too much that can go wrong and if it isnt done cleanly, then afterwards you'll feel more pain than you should.
All that being said, my friend just had his wisdom tooth out here. It was a straight up extraction.. not impacted... He went to Bright Smile Dental Clinic and saw Dr Suon Hach, a friend of his family. Not sure if he got special family prices, but he got a scale and clean for $10 and the extraction was only $30. He said they broke a few pieces getting the tooth out, but it was ok in the end. He couldnt eat for 1 day, and eating for the next few days was hard cos he had to chew on one side of his mouth. He started smoking again after only the 3rd day, so the bleeding started up again and then he stopped for a week like you should.
Ive got an impacted wisdom tooth Im dreading having out. Ill definitely be going to Bangkok.

Thanks everyone for the tips, I shall certainly try Smile for just fillings and a clean first and then think more carefully about the wisdom teeth. They aren't impacted, they are about 80% emerged, just the very rear part of the teeth have gum growing over them which is causing occasional swelling etc. I think re: the wisdom teeth I will go somewhere like European Dental Clinic for a consultation and see whether it's going to involve a general or local anaesthetic then decide from there.
Cheers guys,

I had a wisdom tooth extracted at a dentist near Soria dept store. Cant remember the name but it was a professional looking place
Prior to extraction, dentist told me I could don my helmet and ride back to Snooky next day.(never had a wisdom tooth pulled before so didnt know what I was getting myself into)
Extraction was difficult and gums required stiches.
Went back to hotel, (~5 minute walk away) and after an hour or two stiches broke.
Walked back to dentist, swallowing mouthfuls of blood and shocked receptionist when I opened my mouth to speak.
More needles, more stiches and sent on my way.
2 hours later bleeding starts again so walk back to Dentist
Pain setting in at this stage.
Stiches had held this time but had to keep placing swabs between gums to soak up the leakage .
Sent on my way with a small bag of swabs.
Stuck in hotel for a few days, lots of pain, cant eat, head swollen up like elephant man.
Caught bus back to Snooky, shocked landlady etc when they saw the swelling.
Retrieved motorbike from PP around 10 days later, time it took for swelling to subside and allow my helmet to fit.
Felt like I was recovering from a broken jaw (maybe I was??)
Back to normal after ~6 weeks.

This is the kind of horror story that makes me be sure to go to an international standard dentist. BUT, the same thing can happen anywhere.offroadscholar wrote:I had a wisdom tooth extracted at a dentist near Soria dept store. Cant remember the name but it was a professional looking place

I had the same experience in Oz... went to the dentist, got givenmy local anesthetic, and then my dentist can over and told me that his student would be removing my 3 impacted wisdom teeth while he watched. What Ive learnt that that amount of swelling is in direct relation to how much trauma or how cleanly they can remove the teeth. My removal was pretty much the same as that u-tube clip on Peaceman... rough work with pliers... they may have had their foot on my head as well while they pulled. I too looked like elephant man for about 4 days. It was horrible.
