Why would you pine for a proper Thunderstorm? ... especially with the rainy season so closedancingroads wrote:After weeks of pining for a proper thunder storm
This brings to mind an old saying ... "be careful what you wish for"dancingroads wrote:i am now sitting in 3 inches of water after discovering that the backwash from every house on the street rushes into our place!
Good luck drying out, good idea to move before the rainy season really makes your place the local swimming pool.
cheers

With the filling in of various lakes and other natural drainage locations, as well as the construction of the new drainage system around town, this wet season will mean that the normal flooding zones of PP may change. Normally many of the streets around the palace, Wat Phnom, Psar Chas, Psar Soriya, and the riverside are all prone to flash flooding, with up to knee high water.
All the changes may mean that different parts of Phnom Penh get flooded, compared to what we are used to.
I noticed last night that most of Mao Tse Tung was underwater, which Ive never seen before....

knee high?!
couple of years back turning off 71 was boll+ck deep, had to drag the dailum to shallower water to shake out the exhaust, started on the 2nd turn after too..
sigh was a great bike that one,
[ and if I hadn't got drunk I wouldn't of wanted the late night burger, and if I hadn't wanted the late night burger I wouldn't of left the gate open for the burger guy, or fallen asleep before even ordering it, or been surprised in the morning when the bike was no longer there. ]

I live by the Chinese Embassy, just of MTT ... the storm last night left left around 25-30mm of water on the balcony - this area was hit by a particularly heavy downpour, with several lightning ground strikes very close to here and Russian Market.Doctor Seuss wrote:I noticed last night that most of Mao Tse Tung was underwater, which Ive never seen before....
But I think you are right, the flooding pattern in PP will change this year, especially as some of the new flood protection schemes are not complete - this compounds the problem as normal run-off can't. This will further complicate the flood prevention work as all their holes will be full of water.

dancingroads, this map was accurate as of 14/07/07 and should be worth considering when looking for a new apt just before the rainy season.
White = unknown
Green = passable with no flooding
Blue = flooded but passable by moto
Red = impassable to all but heavy shipping.
If anyone sees any changes it would be interesting to see where...

Not quite true. You will notice that all the water from the riverside strip flows away from riverside towards the markets. that is where the problem is. Sisowath Blvd is high land compared to other areas.

I dunno, some sort of weird reverse asian seasonal affective disorder i suppose..?!? i personally love the rainy season and look forward to those down pours! The dust and scorched landscape of the dry season just doesn't do it for me...Why would you pine for a proper Thunderstorm? ... especially with the rainy season so close
Thanks.. yeah I know the roads around here flood; what I didn't realise is that all the other houses on the street are higher than ours so we got the worst of it Can't help but agree that the problem is probably being compounded by all the lakes/ flood plains that are being filled in at the moment. What's it going to be like when Boueng Kak is (mostly) filled in? But hey look on the brightside, we'd scooped up most of the water by 2am and at least the drains didn't back up.. could've been messy!dancingroads, this map was accurate as of 14/07/07 and should be worth considering when looking for a new apt just before the rainy season.
Pretty much right near me then ......yep it was a particularly big storm this time.. we've had big storms and water enter the gate before but never on this scale. Still I do like to sit back and watch the lightning.. can't beat a thunderclap right over the house (maybe i'm just twisted)I live by the Chinese Embassy, just of MTT ... the storm last night left left around 25-30mm of water on the balcony - this area was hit by a particularly heavy downpour, with several lightning ground strikes very close to here and Russian Market.
Thanks for the pm's koastal..time to scoot around and see what turns up!
