A 10 x 10 m trilingual placard set up on the grounds of the Star Vegas Resort and Casino, advertising the merits of the new Star Paradise Hotel, has raised the hackles of Khmers for the following reasons:

1) The Khmer script is underneath the Thai script.
2) The Khmer script is half the size of the Thai script.
3) The Khmer script is run together without appropriate breaks and is filled with misspellings, making it difficult to read. I.e. ព្រឹក្ប for ព្រឹក, ជប់លៀង្បអាពាហ៍ពិអាពាហ៍ for ជប់លៀងអាពាហ៍ពិពាហ៍.
4) This demeaning sign (including another spotted on a tuk tuk) is displayed on Cambodian land.

This sign has been affronting Cambodian eyes since the 11th of March, 2014, and is the 2nd offense of its kind.
On the 13th of March, 2014, the chief of security at the hotel, Mr. Tea Chang, told CEN that the hotel was Thai owned and that he had no input in matters except when trouble arose. Hence the misconception of reporters who evaluate on sight.

Who gives a crap. Thais, Khmers, Chinese (they are the best at it), and indeed people from non-English speaking backgrounds butcher and abuse the English language all the time and nobody cares. Why is this news? The Thais don’t speak Khmer and can’t be expected to. In the same way, the Khmers aren’t expected to speak and read Thai or even if they have lived in Thailand for a while, good Thai.
