I supplied my direct deposit info in the US to the IRS mid-April, hoping to avoid a physical check being mailed here, where I have not received letter-type mail in over 10 years.
For whatever reason, the IRS later notified me that they sent a check to my address on record - here - on May 1st.
A couple of weeks ago, I went to the post office hoping to find something and eventually got the number for my mail carrier, called him and he told me "no have".
Emailed the Embassy today and they almost immediately mailed me back informing me that they have it. I will pick it up next week.
Many years ago, probably 2006 or 2007, I deposited a US check in my ANZ Royal account and it seems that it took about 5 weeks and $60 to get cashed. ANZ no longer exists and I now do my daily banking with ABA.
In 2020, all I have to do is take a picture of the front & back of the check with the E*Trade app and it will get deposited to my account. I can then dispose of the actual check.
