In my experience when I passed out on a pavement in the Korea capital only to wake up the next morning with everything emptied, even my handkerchief (must be one low thief) my embassy helped me with out with a few hundred bucks but got called an idiot for it, all good though. When I was chatting with this dude works for Dutch embassy in thailand he says oftentimes the broke dutchess would come in to ask for financial help, he says most embassies are obligated to help out their citizens during an emergency, nothing too big but just enough to get by-- a major help such as this one, you can forget about it.

By all accounts, the US Embassy went the extra mile for the little prick, mainly out of sympathy for his family.
Wow, that is actually kind of heart-warming to hear. I respect the fact that there is only so much you can do (if anything) with cases like this, the Embassy probably has some responsiblity to "wrangle" you back in, but if you've truly gone off the "reservation" ... then ...
Yes, all good to know. Condolences for the deceased's family, can't imagine what it must be like.
