Thanks for the correction. I'm pretty certain the original announcement in 2005 mentioned 2011 as the expiry date, but it has probably been extended since.
There are 2 other possible explanations. The previous crackdowns have focussed entirely on local films and music and porn. Authorities have stated that they would take action against foreign DVDs and CDs at a later date. Maybe, for once, they are keeping their promise. There was also a report last week that the government will be building a twin cinema complex, with one theatre concentrating solely on foreign films.
Enforcement has been weak in other SE Asian countries. The usual pattern is that the cops hit the stands in the morning, the vendors buy the stock back from the cops and they are back on sale the same afternoon. Hope it happens that way here, but the decline in quality of the pirated discs concerns me. Most of them are now of very poor quality; without subtitles and audio adjustments. The days of the high quality Malaysian pirate discs seem to be over.
