Low key is always good in any country, but especially in poor countries. Criminals/cons/thieves are usually good at measuring you up, after a while they will notice that You seem to know Your way around the place and then they will probably look for easier targets. Another good way is to look like someone whose disappearance will be noticed. Look at how professionals or embassy staff dress. Dark trousers, short sleeve shirt and closed leather shoes are never wrong, it signals that You work in an office and might be of some importance. The bad people will usually look for other targets. But never show anything of course. Carry a waist pack or whatever, it signals that You are aware of the risk and makes You a less preferred target. Keep small money in an outside pocket but never show big money, credit cards or an expensive phone in public unless necessary. Buy an iPhone 6, new enough to fit into You status image but now something really desirable. And travel by SUV, this is what the classy people do. Don't buy luxury goods in brand stores.
Boring life, I know, but you wanted some input. Remember the trick is to see danger before danger sees You. Keep alert at all times and avoid crowds. Every person you meet is basically a robber waiting to come out as his true self. And keep moving, don't loiter. When in rough areas I always walk at a brisk pace, makes it more difficult for them to sneak up on You unnoticed and also it signals that You are aware of the situation.
to summarize: Wear decent clothes, no open shoes. No tats or motifs. Don't show wallets or wads of money. Try to move by car. Don't loiter. Always walk at a brisk pace and look as if You know where You are even if You don't.
And remember, if hit, stay calm, don't resist and call Your insurance company. You will usually fare badly against a crew of meth stoned guys with foot long beards and AK's.
