I also doubt his family are the wealthy aristocrats he claims. Just another deluded fantasist.
I reached out to his mother a few years ago when he was still in PP. She seemed quite distraught and couldn't figure out how to bring him home and at that point couldn't spare the funds to either travel to Cambodia or purchase him an airfare home (the latter of which had been done twice before but Willy had figured out a way of turning the fare into cash). I spent a lot of time with Willy and while I lacked patience for his delusions (and the fact that you had to keep your shit under guard in his presence) he was genuinely a nice, articulate person who just couldn't figure out that his biggest hurdle was himself - i.e. a walking trope.
I am certain that toward the end he actually believed that the scams he was pulling, including RailroadKids (or whatever he called it), were legitimate business with consenting investors that just didn't pan out how he thought they would. Regardless of his speculative motivations: the dude was undeniably somewhere on the schizophrenia spectrum.
It's nice to hear that he's doing alright nowadays, although I never understood how he managed to collect himself enough back home to want to go back to South East Asia.
