I agree with you, though I do have the impression, the PTSD (alike) symptoms might be more related to the extreme bad, not under their own control, living circumstances especially of the people who were in their very sensible age period (8 - 25 yrs), then with the genocide itself. Despite the regime very cruel, there were no news-papers, etc, to report about this, so people only perceived their own direct circumstances and further word of mouth what happened elsewhere. No Internet, facebook, etc.
A major aspect I do notice, is the huge pressure/habit to spend all money that comes in, with the reason "You never know, if you still live tomorrow".
And also the extreme lack of money in those days, resulting in the parents spending everything that came in, right away, teaching the youth learn that it is normal to spend all incoming money.
