On July 31 Minister of Tourism Thong Khon said that Cambodia plans to launch the "Travel Bubble" program allowing people from low-risk countries to travel freely. If the plan is implemented smoothly, Chinese people may not need to be quarantined upon arrival in Cambodia.
At the same time, Cambodia plans to open up for charter flights to stimulate the recovery of the tourism industry. Many people are skeptical however about whether the plan can be implemented in the near future.
Thong Khon said that Cambodia's tourism industry has been hit hard by the new Covid-19 pandemic, with over 3,000 companies shutting down and 50,000 people losing their jobs. To promote the recovery of the tourism industry, Cambodia plans to learn from the experience of other countries and launch the "Travel Bubble" program and travel charter flights.
The "travel bubble" plan refers to a separate negotiation between one country and another country. The two sides are open to each other for international travel and do not require each other's citizens to be in quarantine for 14 days, just like packing two countries in a protected bubble. Thong Khon said that currently China, Japan, South Korea and ASEAN countries are all target countries for Cambodia's "Travel Bubble" program.
If the plan is implemented smoothly, Chinese people may enter Cambodia without being placed in quarantine for 14 days.
The plan is still being planned by the Ministry of Tourism and the actual implementation requires government approval and negotiation with the target countries of the "Travel Bubble" plan.
