For any fellow Canadians possibly reading this... we don't have an Embassy in Phnom Penh, they give you the wrong information at the Australian Embassy regarding Birth Certificate and such. In some instances you will still need other ID. But I think it's relatively uncommon.
The passport renewal rules changed in the last year but the Australian Embassy is still handing out the wrong information to Canadians. Even the prices are wrong. I talked to the Bangkok people to tell them that the info at the Australian Embassy is wrong...
Just picked up a 36 page passport on Monday, all I needed was my old passport.
Well, it's about bloody time!
I won't forget the time I urgently had to get a passport to get back to Canada to see my dear old Dad before he went into surgery. Went to the Aussie Embassy in Vientiane, put together all the forms, got a Draft Money Order or whatever it was from the Bank for the amount they told me it cost and sent it off by courier, then went to the field after the Embassy folk checked that all was well. Got an e-mail a week later (after my speaking directly with them related to the urgency of said renewal) saying they had just looked at the docs, and I had sent them the wrong amount, thereby overpaying them by $20 or so. I said "never mind, keep it" but they wouldn't do it, I had to either pay in person or resend another Draft Money Order, a process I couldn't do from where I was and which would have cost me more than the cost of the Money Order for the courier charges alone, never mind only $20. Luckily I had a good mate in Bangers who was kind enough to trek over to the Embassy and pay these idiots in cash.
Bureaucrats.
