In my opinion, Cambodians get what they deserve If they won't protest when their own country is at stake. They should be ashamed of their cowardly selves. Hong Kongers are not only taking-on their local government, but the Chinese government too. I have no sympathy for those that just complain all the time without doing anything about it.
My personal feelings are that Khmers are like volcanoes in the way that they bottle everything up while keeping calm and saving face until, BOOM, they can't take no more and sudden, terrifying violence is unleashed.
Soon enough, I predict somethiong will happen like a drunken Chinese ploughs down a group of schoolkids and monks, the mob start burning the car, then Chinese businesses and a full scale riot breaks out. This may also be an excuse to bring in more Chinese 'security' to protect their interests.
I actually disagree. They don't deserve the shit. They have had enough shit and are still finding themselves again.
You know, an individual is formed from the hardship they suffer. So too, a country. Cambodia is moving forward. The youth are exposed to the world with rose coloured spectacles and, well, youthful inexperience. They are also tethered to their elders and tradition (not a bad thing). They dream. They grow. They find. All the mess that exists in the 'regular' development of a human being exists in Cambodia, plus there is the added complexity of a pretty brutal history, a real challenge to find a voice in a time and place where it still takes quite some guts to do it, and people (including western barangs) exploiting and using for their own benefit. Despite all this, Cambodia is really doing its best to develop in a world where no country is getting it right. It's catching up pretty quickly in all sorts of ways, and its youth dares to dream it can be special. Laying this shit about Sihanoukville on them as deserved is pretty brutal. Even the best of you are swayed by money. It's pretty understandable their vision is influenced by the short terms wins of selling property at ridiculous prices without a strategic overview of the larger impact.
Cambodia does not deserve this. The people are bound to fall into learned behaviours... "keep quiet if you want to survive." "take the money while you can."
......
But, as with anyone, back them into a corner far enough and there will be some repercussions.
