^^ One can tour with a mtb, I have met many though none were really doing inter-continental. Most were doing short three months or less of just one country and carry just two panniers at the back, although a few had managed to rig up a front rack as well. There was one Russian kid who had cycled from Russia through Europe to Morocco over a very long Spring n summer.
I reckon a mtb with a trailer is a good way to go and tour especially in SE Asia where main roads are good, cycle , find a hotel, dump trailer and then explore the surrounds and get off road.
And of course you can always go bare minimum and bike pack. I meet one Swede who was cycling the muslim south in Thailand for two weeks and had only one cycle shirt n shorts which he rinsed out and dried every night in the hotel room plus two changes of non cycle clothes. No towel or toiletries, just a toothbrush n paste, a phone, puncture repair kit and that was about it. He was also on a carbon fibre road bike and was doing 150k to 200k a day! I don't think everything put together bike n kit could have weighed more than about 10 kilos.
