The year that happened (1970) I was also a merchant seaman working on ships in the area. It was definitely the scuttlebutt on an otherwise mundane voyage. As a teenager, it all sounded like an adventure above and beyond the usual. The usual being in some remote location but occasionally in Saigon or Phnom Penh. Everyone wore "Cao Jeo" (black traditional pants that might last a lifetime; "Cha-Keo" (rickshaws) or "Xy-clos" (pedicabs); "Ptaya O-Phien" (opium dens); "bia -hoi" (draft street beer); "Srei-Psha" (hookers); "sat-ch'kai-ang" (doggie BBQ), etc.
