The shocking thing is, that two airplanes with 600 people from South-Africa to Amsterdam did have 61 people Covid-19 infected. Unknown, how many Omicron infections, though a 10% infection rate is shocking in itself.
Given, it seems to take around 14 days to do gnome sequencing, it is quite reasonable to expect (not proven), the Omicron variant is already widespread all over South-Africa, and has been spread all over the world (except maybe China, since they do let in only a very few people).
So, yeah, spreading-wise, this will be going fast (given this one seems to be significantly more contagious as the Delta version).
On the other hand, we don't know how sick people get from this version and/or how deadly it is. No reporting yet. In the lucky situation, people don't get really sick and/or it is marginally deadly, this might be the life-saving version, since then it might bring herd immunity, without the Delta version effects.
