I hated him in the 80's and 90's when he was boxing.... I liked Evander Holyfield better.
More recently I've watched doco's about his upbringing, his rise in boxing, the death of his mentor and the influence of Don King. I have more sympathy for him now.
Also watching his early fights, he is intense, focused, excellent defensive work and almost robotic in his self control, very rarely throwing a further punch after the knockout blow. So focused on the fight, that after turning away at the knockout, the umpire needs to point him to his corner. He was young guy with a hell of a lot of ability, who had a helluva trainer and mentor, who lost his way in the big time after losing him to soon. He was a different man after prison. When he fought Holyfield you could see fear and doubt in his eyes, but in his prime, I think now, he could have beaten anyone.
