Re: Entamoeba histolytica: anyone had this parasite?
Amoebic dysentery is way overdiagnosed world wide. It is next to impossible to diagnose from a stool sample not only because there will be occasional false negatives (cases where it may be present but not seen) but there are many more false positives (reported positive but actually negative). The re...

Re: Phrases/saying in Khmer that always get a good reaction
I was once eating out with some Cambodian friends who were making a play on words based on 'Bo Bo Khdao' (hot porridge) and giggling hysterically. I didn't understand the joke and they were reluctant to tell me what was do funny but eventually explained that it involved 'bao bao kdor' which I believ...

Re: Why you maybe shouldn't eat street food in Cambodia
Can't really advise on treatment. Metronidazole and tinidazole are both active against Entamoeba but I think metronidazole is usually followed up with other drugs to eradicate the protozoa from the intestine. I'm not aware of any labs in Cambodia that are using PCR testing for stool samples. Its exp...

Re: Why you maybe shouldn't eat street food in Cambodia
I had a look at the thread that you linked to. I don't for a moment believe there's any accuracy in the poll at the start of that thread. One of the problems as I said is that Entamoeba histolytica is morphologically identical to the non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar. This was only recognised in the 1...

Re: Why you maybe shouldn't eat street food in Cambodia
Amoebiasis is actually very uncommon in Cambodia. There are many species of amoeba in stools and most of them are non-pathogenic. The main pathogenic one is Entamoeba histolytica and its very uncommon in Cambodia. In fact I don't think there's a lab in Cambodia that can correctly identify this speci...

Re: Why you maybe shouldn't eat street food in Cambodia
Just so you know, the most common parasites in Cambodia are hookworm and Strongyloides. Neither of which come from eating street food. You get them by walking around barefoot on ground that's been contaminated with faeces containing the parasite. The parasite burrows into the skin of your foot and e...

Re: Sach koh ang
Khmer unlike English is all about the vowels. There are many vowel sounds that simply don't exist in English, and for most words if you get the vowel slightly wrong the meaning changes. Personally I think unless you learn to read Khmer to at least ABC level you will be constantly banging your head ...

Re: Sach koh ang
It's all about the rhythm when you ask for iced coffee with milk: cafe-doh-ko-tkoh. Ask for the short version, not the longer cafe-tuk-doh-koh-tkoh, leave the tuk. My experience is also that if you are with Cambodians, the seller will just assume you speak some foreign language and 'switch of', swi...

The ones you want to MASTER: jouy and joy. Yes I've heard the story of the foreign tourist stranded by the side of the road and calling "help me".. Two other ones I have problems with are "luen/lueng" (fast/yellow) and "loy/looy"(money/handsome - perhaps it's wishful thinking on my part that I hear...

Sach koh ang
The other day I went to a khmer restaurant with a couple of cambodian friends. The waiter came to take my order and I asked in my best khmer if they had sach koh ang (beef on skewers) - one of my favorite cambodian foods. The waiter said no. Then one of my Cambodian friends asked the same question a...

The subject of pedophilia does almost seem an unhealthy obsession with some members on here.bitcambodia wrote:This board is too obsessed with pedos to have picked up on that.

Re: Gender discrimination in employment practices
Outrageous that people should be advertising gender specific jobs in this way in this day and age. And amazing that some people on this forum seem to support it. Seems to be an assumption that any male who applied for this position is likely to be a kiddy fiddler. The best person for the job should ...

The version of this I've heard is:Jamie_Lambo wrote:
Mtes na men hel - which chilli(woman) is not spicy
"Mtes na min hul, srey na min prochan"
"what chilli isn't spicy? what woman isn't jealous?"
And on the subject of spicy:
"Knyei kantae chas, kantae hul"
"The older ginger gets, the spicier it becomes"

Re: Khmer Songs Beyond Lyrics
Thank you so much for providing the translations of these songs. Although my Khmer is only rudimentary I'm a big fan of Ros Sereysothea and Sinn Sisamuth. Their songs are timeless and their life so tragic. It's great to hear them and know the meanings behind the words.
