Re: Joe Garrison raffle prize update
^^^ He's been in PP a long time. Or at least I met him a long time ago, maybe 10 years. We had a few good chats and he, as the veteran, gave me some good advice, which still stands. Since I'm not in PP these days, I just simply made a donation. He's one guy who deserves more time in this realm.

Re: BMA bans all street food across Bangkok this year
Ludicrous. Day after day and month after month, the junta is sucking the life out of Bangkok. I certainly think there's a whiff of upgrading the tourist demographics, what with all the high-end malls and rising costs at restaurants, bars and supermarkets, plus the stupidly expensive condo projects j...

Re: My experience with BMW Mini in Cambodia (more pictures added)
Whoa! 17 L/100 km is atrocious. Anyway, love the Mini. But Cambodia is definitely the wrong environment. Smooth pavement and sharp corners are its metier. I do remember how bad it was on anything but smooth asphalt. Running the truck lanes meant constant corrections through its darty steering and sh...

Re: Where do you want to retire?
Looks like the Lao visa/extension is pretty painful, like they don't want expats to settle down. Actually, not much has changed there since they don't want to be a Little Thailand so they don't make it easy. Here's a typical Lao expat resident's year-long visa odyssey, courtesy of Expat Laos FB page...

Re: Where do you want to retire?
Heard a lot of great things from friends who have spent time in Luang Prabang. Lao visas are not easy, it seems. But any info I've come across is too old to be dependable. Waiting to join the Lao and LP FB pages today to follow visa tips.

Akira, great to hear that you're active and busy. Are you in Vietnam? That's my next residential destination come late spring. Hope family things are going a lot smoother in your new location.

Re: Lack of bars in Russian Market area
I wonder if Thailand is full of beards too? My neighbourhood, Phra Khanong, suffered a recent infestation of beardies, with further sightings on the BTS and the Suk craft beer bars. Likely caused by its relatively undeveloped nature, meaning apartments are older, bigger and therefore affordable (so...

Re: Myanmar named as Tefler paradise
I read the OP story a few days ago. I remember Vietnam being No. 2. I know there is a real shortage of "real" teachers in VN and the government is bent on raising second-language standards even higher because they are unhappy about English proficiency among Viet students. From what I can tell they r...

Re: Lack of bars in Russian Market area
I did a three-night run in TTP a few weeks back on a visit to PP. I met Mr Drink and Mr Ink. It would be my home bar were I to set down roots. It always had customers. The front tables outside and even inside were nice and comfy. I remember the prices were reasonable and customers a cool mix of loca...

How old is that bar? Seems to me it's only 1-2 years in business.
Anyway, to keep the youngish clientele, seems to me you'd need to keep most of the youngish staff, especially (ex-Rehabb) Nat.
120K? Duh, no thanks. I'd take Lone Star thank you at 65K.

Re: Wtf is Akira?
AE86/AK87 posted about the hard times his Viet wife and relatives were having with "authorities" in Cambodia. Which led him to say he had had enough of Cambodia (and possibly the nobs on 440). Guess he fled. Too bad. I miss his motorhead and coffee posts.

Re: Lone Star Saloon and Guesthouse for sale
I've stayed away from this topic but now I have to respond. I know who cooks the food and does it rather well. She's Khmer and a family member. The whole family kicks in on everything and has run a fairly successful restaurant and "home away from home" for Americans and any other westerners who desi...
