Re: Heng got into Oxford
Great news!! Will Heng be the first Cambodian passport-holder to study at Oxford? A fantastic achievement indeed and it goes a long way to proving how equal the opportunities in the UK actually are. Clearly the best option for Heng was to go to the UK when he did :-) So much stupid in this one it i...

Really, is this the metric for judging fathers? This thing is indicative of that thing?Master Donut Baker wrote:peaceman, that is an indicative that you were/are a good father.
I am not saying he wasn't. I knew them both and think he was. Just not that one thing is indicative of another. Find the comment puzzling.

Re: Saving for college
I have three and one is a few years away from college. She (we) lived in Cambodia until she was 7. My goal has always been to have $100K for each for when they get to college, and they can spend that all in a year or two, or make it last. In talking to neighbors and other middle-class Americans wher...

Yes your use of advanced vocabulary is very intimidating. Reminds me of Tolstoy. Please more.violet wrote:My request, should a person I know hear of it before I actually cark it (Americans will have to look up that term, i expect)

Re: UN Peacekeepers in Central African Republic
I heard on the radio the other day that one was beheaded and 3 were missing, then were later found dead. That is too bad. I wanted to know where any other Cambodian UN peacekeepers are deployed. I know there were some in South Sudan previously. Is that info public? Central African Republic looks li...

Central African Republic looks like a dreadful place. Is that one that gavinmac has already been too? Mustn't be a more horrifying place than that?

This Clive Cressy things reminds me of the Thomas Baron Von Engelhardt arrest. That was '06 and he got 12 years. Wonder if he ever made it out. There was a thread on 440 about it at the time. Not sure how far back they are saved... http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/sounds-torture-heard-months ht...

Checking in on old haunts
Returning to PP in June. Lived there from 2001 to 2010. Bringing my wife and three children, two of whom were born there. Wanted to visit some of the places we used to go to but not sure if they are still open: Chi Cha, the Pho place opposite Rising Sun, Boat Noodle in BKK, Tu Chan over by O'Russei ...

Re: Best English language books for beginners studying Khmer
I used Colloquial Cambodian by David Smyth, and supplemented that with the Huffman books. That was my foundation - learning the alphabet, and the different vowel sounds with the different consonants, basic syntax, etc. Then once I worked through those, I would buy the Cambodia Daily, and find which ...
