OP - has it occurred to you that you're guest house proprietor might have said that to put the willy's up you so you stay in that guesthouse and use their restaurant/bar every evening? It's been known.

I've just spent a year teaching in Thailand and now I'm relocating to Cambodia. I am qualified, experienced and not young so not in the same situation as the OP, but I can tell him that coming from the West to Bangkok would be a major culture shock but in the context of a reasonably developed societ...

Probably depends on the official you're dealing with - and yourself. Two days ago I went to the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok to get a business visa. The guy asked me for 50% 'mark-up' and I raised an eyebrow, politely citing the correct price of $25. He responded with 'three working days' to which I...

Any comments on this lads? Anyone recommend I show my face? I'll be in PP in two days, ready to job-seek on Monday, but I thought I'd detected less than ringing endorsements for this worthy institution. I'm in the 'ideal' category (i.e. a real teacher) so what pay should I ask for - if indeed I shou...

Hope I run into you soon - I'll definitely buy you a beer. No problem, matey. After alienating all my friends with hours of beer-soaked boring old stories about my plump ex Khmer bargirlfriend I sometimes feel like I can redeem myself by making a few helpful posts on my mate's website ... Well they...

Thanks for those insights Mac. I'll be there in about a week. I thought my year in a college in Thailand would have me well prepared but from what you say uni students in Cambodia are far worse. Still, for 2 or 3 hours contact time per day to fund working with street kids I could swallow it! More qu...

Dr. D - thanks, already read that article and the discussions it spawned. I'll have a look when I get there. Dr. S [my goodness we're all so highly qualified here  ] - thanks for the tip. I've just finished teaching at a college in Thailand where I faced the same frustration. At least I'm u...

Getting the timing right
My first ever post, so please be kind :prey: After that gloves are off  I have 20 years' teaching experience in UK, an MA, 3 years' TEFLing in Asia, so I have a few more credentials than some newbie backies. I'm about to quit Thailand and relocate to PP. My intention is to secure a part-tim...
