Too thin and tomato sauce not great, but for $5 even this Sicilian-American from NY ain't complaining.

Do you do anything for Valentine's Day for your Missus?
Do you treat Feb 14th with the scorn that a Hallmark Holiday truly deserves while living in Cambodia, or does your Khmer songsaa expect you to do more than just buying a bouquet of flowers? According to the article from the WaPo a few years ago, many local take it seriously. https://www.washingtonpo...

WiFi issues
I would say since around Jan 1, my Wifi which was previously awesome, has slowed down precipitously and is totally unreliable. A few colleagues have said similar so wondering if this is a citywide problem. I have SiNet fwiw.

Re: SE Asia Globe shuttered
It was OK, but they paid their freelance writers $0.12/word (this was in 2012, maybe it increased over the years) and I know this scared away quality Western scribes.Lucky Lucan wrote:That's a shame, it was a quality publication.

Re: What would you do?
Did you know that not every teacher in Cambodia is a TEFLer, and that some of them actually are educational professionals who teach specialized subjects? I know, who knew? And yes, I bought a lock, and took great satisfaction of locking it up right in front of the guard and then jangling my keys aro...

Re: What would you do?
The resolution to the issue was that when I went home, I saw the guard lounging around like nothing had happened and I saw my bicycle was back in the parking area. He was dozing already and I made a loud remark while waiting for the elevator like "have a nice ride, bud?" Which dazed him (he speaks n...

Re: What would you do?
buy a locking chain for the bike on the way home. $2 moto sounds like you could just walk it The $2 moto ride isn't the point. The point is it's a serviced apartment that provides free parking for tenants and a 24/7 security guard. Shouldn't have to buy a lock and chain in such a situation, or mayb...

What would you do?
I have NO LUCK when it comes to apartments in Cambodia (see the link here for my issues 2 years ago: http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=56757 ) I presently live in a $450/month serviced apartment. This serviced apartment provides 24/7 security in the lease agreement. The security...

A people in limbo
A very impressive photo essay on the Vietnamese floating villages in the NYT today. Long read, but worth the time and some interesting photos. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/03/28/magazine/cambodia-persecuted-minority-water-refuge.html?mtrref=undefined&gwh=FA697A7ED4C49A1D505EBF002A78413B&...

Where do you go for KNY?
Each year I usually head to a non-Buddhist majority country like Vietnam for Songkran to escape the holiday. This year I was considering just loading up on booze and food and staying in my PP apartment but I'm still debating. I have no desire to go to KPS, Kampot, or Siem Reap which will all probabl...

Re: Vietnamese/Cambodian relations
There's a good novel recently published called Midnight in Cambodia that goes into the topic in a semi-serious semi-humorous way. $5 e-book on Amazon. I'd grab a copy

Re: Probable Bulgarian Unabomber wannabe steals ATM pin pad shield
There's an older American expat who literally lives in the Bulgarian embassy like Julian Assange-style, I think he pays $250/month in rent. Anyway, he told me the "ambassador" there is really just a low-level bureaucratic functionary whose job it is to check up on the 5 or so Bulgarians in Cambodia,...
