Restaurants that Deserve a Mention
Many didn't survive the lean times, so to some great ones old and new.
Blue Emerald. Mr Wet/Wen formerly of Blue Dolphin has opened up here. Great food - today had duck, perfectly cooked, last time mussels and bass.
The Dolphin had its detractors, and let's face it was a shithole, but the main man was and continues to be a great cook.
It's in 154.....or if you cut/slice through Chop Chop Alley from 172, just over the road on your right (if you emerge).
Restaurant au Coin/On the Corner - I'm sure this used to be somewhere else, on a corner. Anyway now it's on the river and still excellent. Frog, Khmer and Thai food at very reasonable prices.
Kathmandu Kitchen still consistently good.

Kathmandu kitchen is 200 meters from me, so I have become a regular.
On the Corner always scares me a little, need to get my act together and actually eat there.

On the corner is still ok but was much better before
Don't try the couscous, it's bland
The tournedos with green pepper is good but they have to be told to cook the bacon around it, otherwise it's a fatty mess.
The fries always arrive undercooked
Harry's Friday $5 specials on riverside are worth it, their cheeseburger is excellent.

I’ve never set foot in Harry’s, due to them choosing to associate themselves with a bunch of alt-right arses.

La Dolce Vita on 172 and Lone Pine on 51 both consistently good over the last few years, Genova Trattoria at Meta House, St 228, best Italian food in the country
Time for a thread on best Khmer breakfast restaurant?

Which alt-right arses would that be. The food is okay there but the customers are a grim bunch.nerdlinger wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 12:56 amI’ve never set foot in Harry’s, due to them choosing to associate themselves with a bunch of alt-right arses.

Not sure what alt-right is and I am not sure if Harry’s customers belong, as they never seem to talk, they are only intent on looking miserable.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 7:47 amWhich alt-right arses would that be. Any of the Metro restaurants - food is solid since inception & staff better trained than hotels that purport to be 5-star+
Lone Pine - American sized portions & the best burgers + hot sauce in town.
Shiva Shakti + Sher-e-Punjab (130) for Indian
Porkei Seafood for Chinese
La Croisette various food + preferred spot on Riverside view/fresh air, although The Waterside is coming up quickly there, only downrating as service is still at "we just opened a restaurant with new Khmer staff" levels. Ouch,
Both Hops restaurants solid, sausage fest!
Sushi Tei (Exchange Sq.) for sushi
Delivery, Brooklyn tough to beat.
Food is all very subjective though isn't it? Everyone likes different things, or folks have had great experiences where others had a nightmare. That's me list anyway.

After reading this thread earlier today, I searched for Sunday roast and found Penh 178. Walked the 2 kilometres there, sat down, got a menu, made my choice and waited. Waited some more. Yet more. Left after 15 minutes; never got my roast. Had a very mediocre meal at Digby’s. Only found out later that Penh 178 has a large outdoor area, I was sitting inside the restaurant.

Poor customer service is one of my greatest bug-bears here. Even at the Do Forni restaurant in the Sofitel the other week we had a meal with a larger group, everyone except one person ordered a starter & a main course. When the starters came the one person got their main course - which then left them in a quandary. They couldn't just let the food sit there whilst everyone else was eating, but at the same point even eating super slow they were finished about 10 mins ahead of the first main course that came out. Then whilst everyone else ate their main, this poor sod had to simply sit and watch with an empty plate. It was diabolical for an establishment of that stature to make such a basic error. Seen the same in Rosewood also a year or so back. Whoever trains the Metro staff really could make a killing providing training for other establishments that should be miles better than they are. Some great food out there, but I can't be arse to go through the crappy service to get it.

How about ordinary Jap restaurants where you can have a set or bento? There's a surfeit of flash sushi and sashimi places, though I notice Japanese folk don't eat that too much here and some has clearly been frozen.
Ninja in 278 is pretty good for this.
Katanashi has the old school wooden drinking den with food vibe and is also good but a bit more expensive. Popular with golden youth.
There were a few cool ones way down 63(?), over Mao, run by genki young Japanese dudes but I think they are gone.

Vitking was always one of my favorite places, vegetarian but I’m not vegetarian so you know it’s good. It was also a great value besides the food being top notch. Hence it was always busy inside but never waited too long.

I think One Eleven or Eleven One in TTP always seems to provid good food at decent prices.
Agree with Spigzy re customer service, good food with poor customer service is a real pity.
