There's probably a lot of envy behind that comment.Upon arrival at their establishment yesterday the girl who was accompanying was, completely without provocation, greeted with, and I quote "small girl who likes big barang cock teh?" in Khmer language by the security guard at the front of the premises.
Cant see the lowly paid securitydop being that happy with his lot in life.
Feel sorry for genuine khmers on the receiving end of such comments.
Must be interesting for expats who speak khmer, derogatory comments from locals occur on a daily basis ?

Just a few comments for Jaya. . .
Are you a woman? You actually left a job because a few low lives made "rude comments" to you? What the hell are you going to do at your next gig if a student makes googly eyes at you? Will you yelp blood curdling cries and run off to the next country?
The instructor told me later that the kid was a guard and he had to "pass" him for a guard job. Taught him to grip, breathe, and squeeze but the kid missed the entire target every time. Arming him with a baseball bat would probably be more effective.

So you're a woman and a commie? And how does a teacher take advantage of a "tiger economy"? . . . paper or otherwise? It is not a given that economic growth leads to fair distribution of that wealth to all segments of the population.
Actually, these two examples have very little in common but I witnessed something very strange back in the States. At a range, I saw this young black kid and as soon as the instructor handed him the firearm, I knew I didn't want to be anywhere near. The young kid swung the firearm loosely and with the back of his hand facing up to the sky(gangster stylee), the kid began spraying his shots.(He left a clean sheet)4. This phenomenon is no different than the same process happening in the United Sewer, when hoards of affirmative action recipients are given the opportunity to work in low-level law enforcement positions (guards, homeland security, etc.) in which they do not have the maturity level to do the job responsibly and professionally.

vermin, u touched on many good points. frustration, jealousy, ignorance, greed, and lack of proper education(western) lead these people to behave and act that would perplex western people that consider normal, civil and logical. if they were to converted to christianity that would be a first step to heal themselves of greeds and materialistic world that had made their lives so miserable all this time...
the chosen land.

Given what has been discussed in this entire thread, I think we need to focus on how khmers stand up for themselves. There's always talk on the forum about how a small fight with a khmer leads to an escalating situation due to revenge and the khmer loss of face etc etc, but surely the khmers themselves have a way of standing up to each others' small-time bullying without blowing each other away.
A few members suggested punching out the mouthy 'u like big dick' security guard; some others have suggested ignore it. I guess in the west a security guard probably wouldn't give cheek to a guest in his building, but in similar circumstances (ie being on the receiving end of a smartass comment) we would probably all think of an equally smartass retort or just say say 'fuck you, small dick' and that would probably be the end of it.
So, what do the khmers do? if they are lower on the social pecking order than the guards, do they just ignore it?

Let's just lay it out there. You're not "starting" to look down on them, you always have. Are you telling me that any Western guy who shows up to Cambodia looks UP to the low lives of Cambodia? Are you kidding? Did you look up to crack addicts back home?Bar Steward wrote:They clearly have a massive chip on their shoulder, instead of between their legs.
I hear more and more their reaction to the merest slight is "You barang look down on, disrespect khmer people". Hmmm, I'm starting to.
The question here isn't whether you look up or you look down on them because everybody looks down on them. (And as you mentioned, they know this) The issue on hand is how you allow this point of view to affect you internally and externally. Jaya quit his job over a Cambodian low-life. Some of you seem to feel really eh . . ."hurt" over this. How about just smiling and being happy that the roles aren't reversed?
