I supplied my direct deposit info in the US to the IRS mid-April, hoping to avoid a physical check being mailed here, where I have not received letter-type mail in over 10 years.
For whatever reason, the IRS later notified me that they sent a check to my address on record - here - on May 1st.
A couple of weeks ago, I went to the post office hoping to find something and eventually got the number for my mail carrier, called him and he told me "no have".
Emailed the Embassy today and they almost immediately mailed me back informing me that they have it. I will pick it up next week.
Many years ago, probably 2006 or 2007, I deposited a US check in my ANZ Royal account and it seems that it took about 5 weeks and $60 to get cashed. ANZ no longer exists and I now do my daily banking with ABA.
In 2020, all I have to do is take a picture of the front & back of the check with the E*Trade app and it will get deposited to my account. I can then dispose of the actual check.
Cashing US Treasury Check
You may want to try and open an online bank account or brokerage. If you have a Capital One credit card they might make it easier to open a capital one online bank account as they can possibly skip over some verification steps. Same for Amex or other cards that may offer online bank accounts.Boredinlax wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 11:01 amI went to ANZ with no luck. I don't mind the fee. Which ANZ branch did you go to?
Once you have an online bank account you can use the app to deposit the check and from that point send the money to yourself via western union, you wouldn't be able to receive the physical ATM card to withdraw.
I would also consider sending an email asking the embassy for advice.
I don't have an online account but that would be the next thing I would consider if no cashing option at local banks in Cambodia.

Why are they sending out cheques? Haven't they switched to sending out cards now?

As a matter of interest why are they giving murcans who live overseas this money?
Is it the election?
Is it the election?
Americans living overseas remain subject to US taxes, I believe. As such it would be wrong to exclude them from taxpayer handouts.
It's very lax, you can basically live like a king in the 3rd. world without paying taxes as a US citizen living abroad.
without feeling remorse.
At $8750,- a month, you could be frequenting Hard Rock Café all you wanted,The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE, using IRS Form 2555) allows you to exclude a certain amount of your FOREIGN EARNED income from US tax. For tax year 2019 (filing in 2020) the exclusion amount is $105,900.
