Anyone else see the two barangs splattered all over the sidewalk late night on Saturday on the Riverside near Riverhouse Lounge after coming off a bike the male barang was driving?
I didn't see the crash, but I did see the carnage and aftermath straight afterwards. A Khmer who witnessed the smash up told me it was a frontal collision and both foreigners were in bad, bad shape. Not moving. Three meter river of blood etc. From what I could work out they were young looking backpacker types in their early twenties. Gotta hope they were OK but I somehow doubt it.

A wise Aussie once told me to get on the back of his bike rather than ride me self. He was a traveling fool whom I met in Boracay, Philippines.
"If you don't ride a motorbike in your own country do not ride one in Asia." He scolded me. I wouldn't dream of driving a car in Asia, let alone a motorbike among the hustle the bustle and the craziness that is the city streets of Phnom Phen. Not going to do it. I'll walk. Take one of them tuk tuk's instead. Or a motodope. Taxi!

Today's brand of 'young backpacker' is nothing like what you had in the Seventies or Eighties -- back then, that crowd tended to be a lot more cautious (except for those who got involved in dope smuggling).Licentious wrote:Nope. It was a male and female btw. Both were barangs and the female (the passenger, I guess) was in a bad way.Helmets?
If you've ever seen that movie 'The Beach', you get a good picture of backpackers since the Nineties....and you get an even better one if you go to those full moon parties on Koh Pha Nang -- or whatever the place i s called: blithering morons who steal everything they see, since they generally come to Asia with half the budget they're supposed to have.
And still, I feel sorry for those two -- even if they survive, it sounds like they're terrible damaged.
I spoke with a guy this evening, who knows the people, there was 3 barangs on the moto, 2 girls and a guy, from what he told me, they live here( working), they were T-boned by a couple of khmer guys on a moto, who were driving very fast. He said that the 2 khmer guys died and that one of the girls was in bad shape. I have looked in the CD and PPP but could see nothing, i dont know if it was in any of the khmer papers today........

A friend of a friend still lives and works in PP. He has managed some bars there over the last 4/5 years. He's in his mid twenties i would guess. I heard on the grap vine that this guy had an accident in PP the last few days and that he was in hospital. Seems likely he could be the same guy. His name is Nik Ray. Anyone confirm that its him and his condition?

I feel the complete Opposite. Been here to long to trust my life to some local, (high on whatever) that has not a clue how to drive, no where he is going but borrowed his freinds bike so now he is a motoguy.earl wrote:A wise Aussie once told me to get on the back of his bike rather than ride me self. This includes the moto guys in Bangkok as well.
Been driving bikes and cars in asia long enough to recall when there were no traffic lights in Phuket
I feel no sympathy for the guys or girls that come over and expect traffic to give them way cause they are Tourists
