Employment for Barangs who speak/read/write Khmer?
Apart from the obvious translating, (which Khmers with a good grasp of English will do much, much cheaper) are there many employment opportunities for Barangs who speak near fluent Khmer and can read and write Khmer script too?
When teaching ESL/EFL its unecessary to speak any khmer at all (though useful to hear what students are saying about you!) and in my current job (NGO type stuff but NOT the big bucks variety), my khmer language skills are a bonus, but not an essential requirement.
My experience is that it's a bit of plus if a barang can communicate in Khmer with his/her Khmer collegues, answer the phone etc, and it's a real bonus in day to day living but there are very few jobs out there where it's a necessity.
-I feel totally understretched in mycurrent job, and most khmers are completely astounded that I see this as a negative! Would like to put my language skills to better use.

I have yet to find a job based just upon this ability myself over the last couple of decades here in the Penh...it is considered a bonus to other skills you can bring to the table.
Khmers with good English skills are far cheaper and hordes of them are looking for work.

Ya, we all know how well that worked out for me...logos wrote:Open a bar. It's more efficient shouting at the girls in their own language, and you'll also be able to tackle the corrupt bureaucracy yourself.

didn't want to be tarred with the "overpaid, fat, lesbo NGO worker" brush.
(Fat lesbo NGO worker will do just fine.)

Back to the OP:
My advice - get yourself married. My Cambodian wife and I are getting a fair amount of translation/editing work. She does the translating (English-Khmer and Khmer-English) and I explain the technical terms and do the proofreading.
General note: anyone's free to PM me if you have any work wanting done.
