Those damned pagans, eh? If only they would worship God the proper way; the God that demands a human sacrifice. What do you like with your pork? Your Lord's flesh and blood? How is it? Hm, ok. I agree with Andyinasia that she might not be Cham. For all I know, as another poster here pointed out, she's hiding bald spots caused by Yamma use. Fair enough. But there was the question of her physical appearance. She does NOT look Khmer at all. I had pegged her as being a member of one of those numberless minorities, most likely Muslim, divorced or widowed, disowned by her family, and forced to work in show business. I sure as hell wasn't going to question her along those lines -- especially since she was, with me at least, always polite and well-mannered. A real sweet-heart.fopro wrote:
Re the girl of the OP. I don't know if she is Cham but I can say that her respectability is no measure of her ethnicity.
Does anyone know what kind of minority groups they actually have in Cambodia? When I visited north Vietnam and north Thailand, I went to "exhibits" that detail very extensively the various minority groups. In Hanoi, the focus was, obviously, on the Hmongs. In Chiang Rai, there was a lot of Hoopla about the Shans -- I hope I got the spelling right.
It's weird. There are people around Pak Bang, Laos, that look positively Indonesian. I'm just trying to corner what "group" this girl belongs too. I guess the easiest thing is to just email her the question.
By the way, a couple of posters here mentioned about silk scarves around the head. She would occasionally use that, too. A long black scarf wrapped around the top skull twice, and then she uses the remaining fabric to bring her hair back up into a "bag", of sorts. And she secures the whole thing with a few neat little butterflies. Looks good.
In case you may have already seen this, Andy, my suggestion is for other viewers:andyinasia wrote:Those damned pagans, eh? So, in essence, for being Muslim and different...?marklatham wrote:They say that there are seven different ethnic groups around kampot and thats just amongst the poms.
No i really meant amongst asians.
The cham were killed because they didnt accept forced marriages and the banning of worship and associated religious practices.
This was why they were killed.
The 'Cham' around Kampot are mostly ethnic Malays who have lived there for generations. They do not come from Champa, have never spoken Cham and got nothing to do with 'Cham' except religion. Their appearance is more obviously distinct from Khmer than regular Cham. They tend to identify as 'Khmer Islam' but they will also accept the category 'Cham' as it acknowledges their religion, of which they are proud.
I have seen a few burkas in Kampot, among the fishing communities a few km downstream from Kampot Town as well as among Khmer Islam communities along the road from Kampot to Kep. But the greatest proportion of women wearing burkas would be along the banks of the Mekong north of Kampong Cham town, I belief, particularly in the village opposite Stung Trong, about 30km north of Kampong Cham, where the ferry is.
The Khmer Rouge did target Cham as such, not just for being rebellious but also for not being Khmer.

Right. Ethnically there are therefore kin of the Muslims in the 3 southern Thai provinces. They deserve huge kudos for staying out of that conflict.

Why do they deserve so much kudos for that? It's thousands of miles away in another country. And I'm guessing that the two groups lost contact a few generations ago.andyinasia wrote:jorai wrote:The 'Cham' around Kampot are mostly ethnic Malays who have lived there for generations. I would say there is little intermarriage and limited interaction between the Khmer Cham and Khmer"buddhist" and as such they are two very different species.
I was down at Bohr's bookstore today and Ysa Osman, has just brought out a new book called "Cham and Buddhist Intermarriage", or something similar, and I haven't read it but it contends that such marriages are far from unusual.
