The ugliest building in Cambodia?
The ugliest building in Cambodia?
Could this be the ugliest building in Cambodia?
My poor friends who live in the grassed area next to it watched in horror over the months as level upon level was added to this monstrosity.
I love that the two small windows on each floor two in from the left are both completely off centre and all the windows have a lip over them even when they are already covered.
I am sure, however, there are some 'finer' examples in Phnom Penh.

Typical horrendous Khmer design but certainly by no means the worst. I feel sorry for your friends next door. Pound for pound I think they build the most poorly thought out, impractical and ugliest buildings in the world. Bathrooms stuck under stairways with no windows or proper shower stalls and cheap plastic fittings ( hey- lets screw a plastic soap holder into the tiles ! ), cheap tiles up the walls, tacky aluminum window frames, disgraceful wooden or plastic doors, unnecessary tin roofs over every outside area and corridor thereby claiming more "usable space" ,kitchens that are like afterthoughts with little ventilation
( why - i thought cooking was a big part of life here ? ) and no sense of leaving a boundary around the building when they have plenty of room. How many times have you seen a house or building with .5m behind it and 15m at the front ?
And they wonder why barangs want to change heaps of things ( including their bloody awful furniture )before they will move in.
Where is the despair emoticon. ?

It's a vile stretched-out wedding cake that takes from everything around it and gives nothing in return.
Who designs these pug ugly monstrosities? And why is that stomach wrenching pink so in vogue amongst locals who have plenty of money but no class?
Bring back Van Molyvan.

I kind of like the gaudy wedding cake building over on St. 63 just south of Sorya Market. Who's got a photo of it?
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
The only solution is to build a huge 4 storey wall right up against the boundary., or at least a 4 storey steel fence with a double layer of black shadecloth, maybe trail up some marrows or whatever they are that grow like crazy.
keepin it riel, lime green seems to be the latest fad. With orange highlights, or the pink you point out if they still have some of the paint left over.

Haven't got that one, but I've got one thats probably worse that I'll post later. Think green metallic windows, huge shiny tiled columns, turrets, etc...gavinmac wrote:I kind of like the gaudy wedding cake building over on St. 63 just south of Sorya Market. Who's got a photo of it?
Who Gives a Fuck?
I have always struggled with the long narrow lawang style homes. I have never been inside a single one with a decent layout. They all seem to waste space and have horrible stairways and kitchens that are often too small to be useful. What doesn't make sense to me either is that rather than building "villa"style homes or more traditional style modern home some wealthier khmers just build large lawangs and knock out the walls in between the units for large spaces with the same cramped staircases and minuscule kitchens. Anyone know where this style of home/apartment originated?
