SIM cards now available at airport
When I flew in two weeks ago there was a small table set up just outside the arrivals door to the right selling SIM cards. I usually arrange in advance for a local to get a SIM card for me, so I don't have to make a special trip with my passport to a mobile shop on arrival. Also, I've found that lot of mobile shops are hit or miss about selling SIM cards to foreigners who don't live in town.
I will probably just use the airport SIM card stand from now on. I assume that they will not give any grief about selling a SIM card to someone who has newly arrived. Does anyone know what network's SIM cards they sell, how much they charge, etc.?

To buy a real SIM card you need Cambodian ID. There is a SIM card legally available for tourists that expires after 2 weeks. It's a bad deal. At least this was the situation in mid-2010.
I wouldn't be surprised if the airport sells the tourist SIM that's only good for 2 weeks. Before buying, make sure this isn't the situation.

I've had some phone shops refuse to sell me a SIM card. Others just wanted a passport. Others wanted a passport and I had to give them a (fake) local address.Fox Mulder wrote:Since when?To buy a real SIM card you need Cambodian ID.
My number ios under my name and has been for years. Showed a passport at the mobitel office and a copy of my lease. A friend got a sim card yesterday to use for internet and just showed his passport. didnt need an address.
I remember the 10 day "tourist SIM cards" popping up about 3 years ago, then it seemed they disappeared because 1-2 years ago no one seemed to have them. Now they must be back.

I'm glad that so many of you had an easy time buying a SIM card, but things weren't so easy for me. I went to a few places around Central market and eventually got referred to the cell shops near Soriya. Either places wouldn't sell to me without a Cambodian ID or they wanted to sell me the tourist sim. Took around 10 tries to finally find a lady who would sell me a card with only my passport for ID. This was in June of last year.

When you buy a sim I don't think you pay extra for more phone time. I believe you're paying more for a "better" phone number. Why better? Easier to remember? Lucky numbers?Master Donut Baker wrote:how much time can a $2 sim card have? get a $10 one or get $50 one if you're always on the phone with someone then someone else then....
I've seen sims for silly prices of $20, $40 or $60 for coveted numbers, such as 888881388 or what have you.
I decided on a "666" as part of my own number.
I bought a sim card last March. They handed me a sheet with phone numbers and their prices to pick from. There was one $100 phone number on that sheet. It was one with repeating numbers. I purchased a card for $3.cityrat wrote:When you buy a sim I don't think you pay extra for more phone time. I believe you're paying more for a "better" phone number. Why better? Easier to remember? At one point after purchasing my card, I spent just under 4 months out of the country. When I returned the time had expired on the card, but I could still put more time on it and it worked fine. This was on the Hello network.
