Possibly a Nigerian English teacher
I registered my fiance at a private international school a few month ago. Recently, during a casual conversation over phone the she told me that there's a black German English teacher was employed at her school, but neither she nor her classmates had any problem; however she said his accent is 'different.' Now we are definitely not racist or anything-- if anything, I am usually the victim. What really disturbing about that is he is living and teaching in the school with one of his black friends and from what I gather he is working it off for his accommodation. Over the years, basing from what I read here on Khmer440, the Nigerians are up to no good in Cambodia. Where my fiance is residing, It's a peaceful, quite little town and hardly any foreigners apart from a few NGO from Japan. My concern is they might be up something like setting up an operation base or whatever those cheeky bastards are up to. I called the school twice so that I can verify the accent, but both time got the 'he's in class.' I am currently contemplating on her withdrawing from the school even though a full year tuition is already paid for. However, before I finalise my decision, I'd like hear 440 members of their experience or encounter regarding to this.
Cheers
Cheers
Everyone bow down and pay extreme homage to his Majesty flying chicken.

I don't think this has got anything to do with race. The plain and simple fact of the matter is that the school should be providing qualified, proficient native speakers - and I don't count Nigerians bouncing around Asia on German passports as having any of those key qualities. Phone the school and explain that you don't want your partner taught by this guy. If they quibble, pull her out of the school and find somewhere more appropriate.

so the "different"accent he has, your girlfriend knows is not a german accent? is your girlfriend khmer? if so,i never met a khmer who could tell a german accent from any other accent. why dont you pop down to the school and see for yourself. he may well be african, with a german passport. it may be that he actually really is working as a legit english teacher. as in,earning a proper living. if you dont go there, you wont really know. ask to sit in on a class for ten minutes. if he offers you a big bag of coke, then you should start to be a little suspicious. ive met dutch natives who are teaching english in pp,and i couldnt even understand some stuff they said!

Its quite possible that he's a German citizen of African extraction. Germans usually do have different accents than your average native-English speaker.black German English teacher
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
There is nothing racist about not wanting a German teaching your loved one.
I understand and empathize completely.

The whole class was told by the head of the English department that he is from German, I mean what is the odd of a German traveler financially broke in a small town like this. Anyway my fiance could barely string sentences together, other than typical greetings let alone the ability to distinguish accent. I am not so much concerned about the quality of the education she is receiving but the possibility of this new English teacher doing dodgy stuff in and out of the school environment especially when I am out of the country for quite some time.

You would think so. They come from a non-english speaking country. I suspect my italian, spoken with an australian accent, sounds different from your average native-italian speakerLucky Lucan wrote:Its quite possible that he's a German citizen of African extraction. I don't know which is worse.
At least a Nigerian might have some coke for sale.

I agree with one poster:
Check the guy out yourself. I know at least two Nigerians who are very good teachers, whilst two native speakers I know have criminal records for drugs, yet teach young kids.
Another point is that most Cambodian students treat school as a freetime activity rather than a serious enterprise, so your friend's lack of progress might be entirely due to this factor rather than the pre-judged teacher's ability.
'I am not so much concerned about the quality of the education she is receiving but the possibility of this new English teacher doing dodgy stuff in and out of the school environment especially when I am out of the country for quite some time.'
Then you'd better start homeschooling, as almost NO schools I know of do criminal record checks.Just ask any school for proof that they do it, but don't hold your breath.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.

The logic here astounds me, why is everyone assuming he's a Nigerian? He could just as easily be from Tanganyika, Somalia, Sierre Leone or even the illegitimate son of a US serviceman.

I am curious, what is the name of this peaceful quite(sic) little town that has a private international school?
