I dont shoot studio work and photography is NOT my main source of income but something i love to do
When i was at art school they hired a teacher from the brooks institute in Santa Barbara, they wanted to get more "professional/commercial " teachers on the staff. First day of class he talked about himself, bla bla bla ( he was a very good COMMERCIAL photographer, like you (and had lots of post processing work done by someone else in the dark room) then a student asked him what he shot for fun, for himself, He told us he never shoots for fun and its his job.
85% of the class got up an walked out never to return.
I don't attack people here, never have, never will, but ur an asshole,
say something constructive or fuck off
PS; Steve has shot for Nat Geo, top magazines and done a few books and has had major world wide exhibitions
what have u done but make $$

What IS post processing? It depends on how you are defining it.
A lot could be done in-camera resulting in a jpeg image, or a person could choose to shoot raw and then change the settings to get what they want from the photo. Choosing a 'vivid' setting or a 'soft' setting in the camera - that's processing too.
Photography is a huge field and like any art form an artist can choose to replicate what the eye sees as much as possible, paint in vivid colours, create an abstract from a scene they view, or a multitude of other things.
It does hugely disappoint me when I see photos and don't know if what I'm seeing is real or a photoshopped job, and by photoshopped I mean adding things that were not in the scene for example - not the type of photoprocessing that is more a part of photography than of image making. Also, before I started getting more into photography myself, I was trying to achieve things that I didn't realise had been enhanced or had stacked multiple images - but now, I can better identify which images have required that type of work. I don't want to be awe inspired by an image that makes me marvel at the world we live in, only to find it isn't reality.
I feel talent dwells where people get the best photo they can using their camera, and then they can either use post processing to get the look they want from the photo or not.
It isn't a black and white Yes, post processing is cheating or No, post processing is not cheating ... there are a lot of variations and things to consider.

I met Steve McCurry at a tiny gallery show in WI several years ago. Got my old Sharbat Gula Nat Geo signed, and there wasn't even a line~ (either this thing was thrown together at the last minute, or no one gave a damn). And for the hell of it, he just started signing shots I liked in a book I had of his. There was a decent crowd, sure, but it would ebb and flow for the few hours it was on. Decent guy. Tight, unpretentious show (about 50 of his shots, and maybe 20 historic American monochromes). I was too tongue-tied for my own good. It would have been nice to chat with him about sneaking over the border into Afghanistan---just wasn't in the cards.

Each to their own.
I tend to sleep in the nude. Which isn't a bad thing except for maybe on those long flights.

well that escalated quickly...
I wholeheartedly agree that art in any form is very subjective.. I love Kennzo's images.. but don't like the weird frames that he seems to add for those posted here.. I also think U2 had a half decent first couple of albums and the rest is shit.. the Rolling Stones have barely enough good music to fill one album and that any food which contains fish is fit only for serving to people whom you don't like.. EVERYTHING is subjective.. I like the post processing of images, for me personally its a means of attaining the image I want, and when I take a picture, I already have an idea of what it will become. When I say I am trying to do more "in camera" I refer to aperture, composition, depth of field, white balance etc etc not any sort of effect. I add the original "as shot" image below.. when taking the picture, I could of selected B+W, maybe asked the chap to move back a bit and a little to the right so the light was how I wanted it.. I chose not to impose on the poor fella and to slightly over expose with an eye to "tweaking" the contrast in post.
Thanks again for the critique.

I apologise for not posting any but really good thread for someone like me who is just learning by themselves, reading, looking at images and gleaning as much as I can soak in from relevant internet stuff. Like Phuket 2006 I like people shots, and given I'm like one of the other posters in overcoming my initial shyness it really helps that Cambodians in everyday settings seem to be generally tolerant and curious if they know they are being photographed. Only my take on things. Luckily I don't know how to upload my attempts so I won't embarrass myself just yet.

The frames only apply to the cover photo for the album so that it displays in the right theme on my front page website, don't use them throughout.charliethreezero wrote:..... . I love Kennzo's images.. but don't like the weird frames that he seems to add for those posted here..
Many thanks for the comments and feedback though.

Just to say thanks to Phuket2006 in his magnanimous reply in our email exchange after I had crankily had a pop at him on here.I guess we are both passionate about our pics
Just some pics I took this week end of my next door neighbours peregrine. Although on second looks it does look like it has hit a glass window. The arty farty black and white is to cover up the fact it had dipped its tail feathers in a tray of curry and the tumeric has stained them bright yellow.
