Found Money

So here is what happened.

I walked in to the ATMs at ANZ on Sihanouk Blvd. There was a man at each ATM, the man on the left turned and left with attitude as I approached. I went to that ATM and it would not accept my card. Thinking it was not working I stepped over toward the other ATM machine. The man there gave me a hard look as I was to his side so I stepped back and got behind him.

At that moment the ATM on the left spit out a wad of cash. I stepped back to that machine and scooped the cash. And then took first one receipt then a second. Turning and stepping out the door the young man who had walked out quickly was no where in sight.

What to do?

1) Return to the bank with the money and receipt, explain the situation and dutifully hand over the cash.

or

2) Hit the town tonight and blow the cash on titties and beer.

Two receipts? Was the amount of money the same as the receipts? Were the receipts for the same customer?

Good luck wasting your time trying to explain that the ATM made a mistake. The ATM would loose face and so deny making a mistake even if it cost it money.

A bar that has fridges has warm beer. A bar with ice bins can truly server ice cold beer. Also saves on you power bill.

Seems you have a conscience...
Give it back and tell the bank to check their video and transaction records for the times on the reciepts. Maybe they can repay it to his account.

So I look at the receipts and they are in Khmer. But it looks like he was trying to take out nearly half his savings of just a few hundred dollars. He was a twenty something Khmer dressed neatly but not wealthy.

I go into the bank proper and take a number to make a deposit with the idea to just drop the money quickly back into his account. It is lunch time and there is a big crowd my number is twentieth in line. Reading the slips I see only the last four numbers of his account number. Looking around there are no managers and this in not my regular branch. I realize this is going to be a hassle and take some time. I can not just hand the money over to whomever and walk out.

I realize I do not have the time to deal with this now. I am supposed to be meeting people shortly and I have the keys. Any way I just leave, I will have sort this little problem later.

You should give it back to the bank because I am pretty sure they have cameras in there.

Unless the machine spat out a few hundred thousand it wouldn't be worth having your face in the papers.

Later that night I had my wife read the receipts. Apparently the machine kept the guys card because of some problem. I told her I was going to give back the guys money and caught seven kinds of hell.

The next morning I went into the main branch with the money and receipts. The information girl could barely wrap her mind around the idea that I was returning lost money and not there to complain about the ATM service in some way.

In do time I met with the Customer Service Manager. She listened and looked at the receipts. I offered to leave the money with her if she gave me a receipt. No she could not take it, she would have to investigate first, contact the other branch and locate the customer. Could I just put in in his account, no. So I left the bank with the money again.

Has anyone heard of this or is anyone using it at the moment?

It seems, on the face of it, to be pretty decent
