By that logic you might as well say don't use the roads at all unless you're traveling in an indestructable Hummer. Blaming the victims is no way to solve any problems, and this is an unacceptable aspect of Cambodian society as LC states. If two or three criminally negligent companies (e.g. the ones putting up the billboards that blew down) got really fucked with litigation, it would bring many more into line. Ain't gonna happen any time soon, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't.SunSan wrote:Not so sure about that regarding the night busses.I don't think we should be slating the backpackers here.
They're the ones asking for night busses. If they hadn't been asking for them for the last 3 years, Virak Buntham wouldn't be providing them.
Look at what has happened to the non- stop Siem Reap to Saigon busses. They're gone. Because the people who were clamouring for them found out that an 11 hour bus ride just isn't that fascinating.
Don't use night busses in Cambodia until it's safe to use them. Same goes for those crappy boats between PP and SR.
night bus to sr blew up!

It's by no means just "cheapskate backpackers" either, not that it really matters who the victims are. It's common enough for expats in SR take the nightbus to Sihanoukville via PP after work on Thurs or Fri night and then back again on Sunday night in time for work Mon morning, to get two or three full days in at beach over the weekend. In fact there's no sensible alternative for travellers on any budget to travel directly SR <-> SV other than the road, so I guess they figure you might as well take care of the driving part while you're asleep.

We're talking about the night bus. Avoiding all travel clearly is not the solution. Anybody who gets on a night bus in Cambodia, including expats, who should really know better, is stupid (at least a backpacker can't be blamed for not knowing he'll not be able to get compensation). And I've no sympathy for their possible plight.

I' ve never used the night buses, and i'd never thought to avoid them until reading this thread. I'm not stupid. I'm quite street smart. Quite aware. I guess sometimes a person just doesn't think of everything.
Now I will. A shame, though, that some had to go through this for my awareness to be raised. No need to slag them off, it's not quite the same as jumping on a crowded party boat that is lurching to one side and has no/not enough safety gear.

Are they using shit busses for the night runs?
You should post this in the other night bus thread, I think it's in the Speakeasy.
Or can a mod 'merge' the two threads?

I love how they call it a "sleeper" bus. Even with totally reclined seats the road is too rough to allow any sleep whatsoever.
I suppose if you're good at sleeping on buses AND take a fistful of Valium you might sleep...

I seem to remember buses in the day time also crash into things, fall off the road etc, should I avoid travel in the daytime as well? What about aircraft, RR seems to be having trouble with their engines lately, should I avoid aircraft with RR engines?
Accidents happen and they are more likely to happen at night, probably something to do with the lack of sunlight. Although I'd bet there are more accidents at sundown when it's even worse to see than at night. So maybe I should avoid those buses that arrive in the evening.
Obviously staying at home in my room on the Internet is a lot safer.

The remainder of your post shows that the first three words of your post reflect your mental capacity .. either that or you are a scumbag backpacker yourself or you have no knowledge of the way things work in Cambodia.dom_wave wrote:I don't think ....
BTW .. welcome to the board.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

If you sit on the front left-hand side of a bus going to SR, Thailand, or Vietnam you will experience at least 2 or 3 close calls from the Grim Reaper. - day or night
dom-wave, I like backpackers as a whole so if your a backpacker - cheers. However justice in Cambodia just doesn't work like this. It just doesn't. Some of the forum members believe that the government is doing an acceptable job in procuring a honest judicial system for the common people. These are the Babbitt's of the ex-pat society. Life is going well for them. Some of us feel that Cambodia justice is like a lost pearl in the Sahara Desert. It is hard to find. Money has nothing to do with justice.

If I knew for certain that a person was coming to my house with the intent of doing me good, I would run for my life HDT
The accident rate cannot be all that bad. How many reported accidents have there been in the last 10 years of buses and trains colliding.
