JM, Brian at Smokey da Boar meats has a hell of an operation just a few kilometers south of Takmau on the river road. It is worth a trip out there to have a look at what he has on offer. Brian also runs a metal fabrication shop and can build anything at very reasonable prices...........and his wife is an expert at importing items from Vietnam.

Brian can be a grumpy old prick but hes a good bloke.
A real all rounder,mechanic,boiler maker,builder and butcher.
He always has the hangi on anzac day too.
I remember one year when two of the maori boys did the haka when before the hangi was dug up.
The khmers couldnt believe it.

Yes boss, and we peed in all the Budweiser bottles already.

Did not think that this was necessary , well the extra would be taking things just a little too far don't you think ? :pissed:

Their sausages are great and have a decent selection. It's a kiwi guy and his Vietnamese wife running the show at a farm just outta town. The wife goes to Vietnam every couple of weeks and picks up anything I need - frozen tail on deveined tiger prawns (26/30) as well as loads of other stuff.

Hamburger mince - $5.8
lean beef mince - $7.5
lean pork mince - $7.0
prime smoked back bacon - $8.0
26/30 deveined tail on tiger prawns - $14.0...
Should be $6.80 for the Hamburger mince...still cheap...
sorry, I think I have a different pricelist as I do ordering for 2 places on a regular basis.

6.8 is still pretty good tho, give it a week and then have a chat to them about starting standing orders (gives them more stability and security) and see if you can get my prices. Just promote to them you'll be a regular customer for a long time (which I guess you will).

Got local beef at 25k/ kg at Sovanna fresh market this morning. Very lean, not really my favourite but good enough for eating after a short dunk in a stock of chicken bones :D

hmm that's strange.

I've always got all my products in fresh (I like to make my own patties/rissoles then freeze them between greaseproof paper).

Used their beef sausages tonight at the monthly A.B.A.C. meeting - blanched in beef stock, sliced then wrapped in rice paper with julienned veg and cheese. Pretty good response with a seeded mustard aioli.

Just have a chat with kim and brian if you get a chance. If you pm me your email I can forward you my current stock/price lists and prior correspondance I've had with them.

This has been picked up by the PPP.
In the first six months of 2011, beef has increased some 12.07 percent to 26,000 riel a kilogramme, smoked fish has seen a 22.63 percent increase to 16,800 riel, and pork has climbed 25.37 percent to 21,800 riel on Phnom Penh markets, the Commerce Ministry’s daily report on Friday showed.

Do they also keep track of the price of beer?

A bar that has fridges has warm beer. A bar with ice bins can truly server ice cold beer. Also saves on you power bill.

I think the beef here is fine. I eat Cambodian beef every single day when in Cambodia. Sure, it's not as good as prime beef in Argentina, Japan or perhaps Australia.. But why on earth would someone expect that? It's CAMBODIA.

I don't get why everybody pretends the beef is so horrifically bad in Cambodia. It's fine considering this is a 3rd world country.

And why people that are expecting 5 star service, michelin star restaurants, perfect roads, traffic rules, western style night clubs, etc. keep coming to Cambodia is beyond me. You can get all that in Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong. What you get in Cambodia is everything those places no longer have - I think that is what is so refreshing with the place. It's the OPPOSITE of all the disgustingly westernized places in the region. One of the few countries left where the people haven't yet discarded their culture, heritage or traditions to join "team round-eye"..

May it stay that way forever Image
