Lucky's Supermarket
Lucky's Supermarket
Did my weeks shop at Lucky's and fancied some apples.Gave them to the guy filling the shelves and showed him which apples they were and the price ticket ($3.30 cents per Kilo)
He weighed them and put them in my basket.
At the checkout I noticed they were priced up at $3.95 cents per Kilo
I went back and asked a lady assistant to alter the ticket but she said they weigh all the apples at $3.95 regardless of the ticket and usually the customer does not notice! She would not re weigh them at the price shown.
Ok so I know its only a few cents ,its not the money but its is a principle thing.

The same everywhere, not just Cambodia: you gotta be a smart shopper and look at the price when she scans it and if you spot a mistake, point it out politely. Offer to show her the price tag on the shelf if needed. If she won't budge you have two choices: ask to talk to a manager or just leave the apples and pay for the rest. Only difference is that in the West there are laws on false advertisement (and if you catch a mistake, they usually have to either match the price, give you an extra 10% off or give it for free if it's under 10$ or something like that) whereas in Cambodia no such thing exists. And lol @ apples for 3.95$/kilo. Like holy shit.

They are an exotic fruit here. Lucky's is a pain in the ass when they haven't got bar codes on some items and have to go looking through a bunch of books to find the bar code.Bitteeinbit wrote:And lol @ apples for 3.95$/kilo. Like holy shit.

Yeah I know, they can be bought for cheaper at the markets though. Still, the mark-up is higher than Durian in the west. I never understood why they don't just memorize the individual codes like in North american supermarkets. it would be so much faster.

i take it you haven't traveled much? The bakery selection and taste rating in Cambodia ranks nowhere near the top of any list imo. Boils down to personal taste though.willyluv wrote:but found the best bakery in the world across the street, Asian Bakery or something like that

Pattiserie Valerie on Old Compton St, London W2 is about a zillion times better than that, and the average village bakery in France is too.Bitteeinbit wrote:i take it you haven't traveled much? That's exactly what I'm saying. My 4 neighborhood bakeries back home are better than any bakery I've been to in Cambodia. It's usually more a matter of finding the "least worst".
I meant the same in the sense that you get billed the wrong amount. Of course there's a difference: it's usually a mistake when it happens in the west (but it happens so often you need to pay attention), whereas they basically purposely steal from customers at Lucky. The same anywhere?? I really can't imagine Tiffany at the Gelsons in Encino saying "we always ring them up at that price" and not acknowledging a mistake. Tiffany would know it was wrong to charge a customer more than the advertised price and it would be fixed. Not same.
Can't beat those small village bakeries - awesome!and the average village bakery in France is too

Someone screws me for 500 riel, who gives a damn?
If they screw me for thousands, I'm going to repay the favour.
As westerners we have to adapt, and often it's us that benefit by adapting, without realising it.
On another topic, and with respect, what's with all the bird-based user names?
Bird-brain, birdy, flying chicken, it's like an aviary.

Those little meat pastries are delicious but they sell out by about 9am every day.

I can't really say I've noticed rip offs at Lucky, but you always have to be on the look out at Pencil 1 (Pencil 2 is a waste of space), especially the 'Two-for-the price-of-one' gig. I forgive them, though, due to the wine selection.

Yeah, I ALWAYS have to tell the till girl that's it's 2 for 1 and then bring her to see the place from which I took it. Luckily there's no one ever there so it's not like she's got anything better to do.

Shouldn't this be in the "Essential Information" section?hanky wrote:Pattiserie Valerie on Old Compton St, London W2 is about a zillion times better than that, and the average village bakery in France is too.
Lucky steals from you even when they stick to the prices advertised. Compare with Thai Hout or Bayon. You can't beat them for stock though.
BTW, where are the least worst bakeries? I like the Shop, but that shit is obviously way overpriced. Any suggestions apart from Asia Europe on Sihanouk? I'd be especially interested in any stuff which is NOT sweet.
More suggestions?
