I knew someone would bring that up. In exceptional circumstances, anyone can become a demon and every place in the world has a proven track record of barbarism. But in a "normal" prison setting (read: not a torture chamber, where the guards don't already have the intent to kill you etc), I think a modern-day Cambodian prison probably ranks highly compared to others. I certainly wouldn't wish it on anyone I know, but if I was being sent to prison today and had to choose between a prison in Cambodia, Russia, China, the US, or most place sin South America or Africa, I would most likely choose Cambodia (depending on the length of term. If more than 3 years I might choose the US). Then again, I've never been to prison so don't really know what I'm talking about. Most prisons are also sorted by crime, so a term in a US prison might actually be "easy" unless your're put in with people with heavy crimes doing long sentences. I wonder if they have "yard" time. being cramped seems like the hardest thing so far and the guy has probably been in there a few weeks now. Either way this blog is a good find.

Not compared to a UK holiday camp Prison. Playstation, TV, DVD, shoot some Pool with your mates, workout at the Gym, game of Soccer, good food. Of course, being denied any of the above is "Against your Human rights" It's a freaking joke.Bitteeinbit wrote: I knew someone would bring that up. IIRC they can go long periods (many days) without stretching their legs in the yard. Ken Svay is the man who knows - he's on intimate terms with the guards and jailbirds at Prey Sar. I'm sure he'll drop by and give an informed opinion soon enough.

I'm not saying it's all sunshine and gumdrops. Just that for some odd reason, I have the feeling he's probably treated slightly better than the average khmer in prison and that a Cambodian prison must be better than others (I wouldn't want to be in a Somali prison, or Russian also comes to mind. If there's one place you don't want to fuck with authority it's there). I wouldn't want to be in any prison, but I highly doubt Prey Sah ranks worst of the world. I guess we can't really know. I don't know anyone who's done time in Cambodia (and even if I did, they would have had to do time in some other shithole to make an appropriate comparison). I agree that it must be no cakewalk, but I have the feeling it's "nicer" than other places. That's actually a motto I often use in bad situations: "It could always be worse" and truth be told, it always can. I also admittedly base this on nothing but assumptions. Prison isn't meant to be fun anyways. For sure some of these guys are long-forgotten. I wonder which barang has been in the longest. For sure there are a few chaps you have been in 5-10 years+.jm wrote:And I'll stand by my "you're nuts". I wonder how many prisoners serving long sentences here live out their terms. I reckon not many. B-Bit you do realize that Cookie is in the block of prisoners not yet sentenced, people who are still being paid attention to right? It's gonna get worse.
Maybe some of the Nigerian folk here can give a detailed account of life in a Nigerian prison compared to life in a Cambodian prison.

Atleast if you are in an American prison they have to provide medical treatment for unlike the poor people that have to pay taxes to keep them there.
Maybe discovery channel could do an episode along the lines of "locked up abroad - the 10 worst places to get banged up" either les stroud or mike rowe could spend a month in each

FWIW Licadho believes Cambodia is one of the 10 most overcrowded prison systems in the world.
I still think living with 6 other guys cramped in a 1.8X2m cell beats being raped up the ass, forced into a white power gang and shived in a US prison. Not that some of those things can't happen in a Cambodian prison, I'm sure they do (though I suspect forming a white power group might not be the best idea).Go to a US jail and you might get more food, but the rest of the "prison package" would probably make the overall experience much worst. My innocent self suspects that among third-world countries, Cambodian prisons must be among the "best". I just don't see khmer prison guards beating up a barang for some reason.
