Yeah, its a good idea, there are too many bloody foreigners here now.andyinasia wrote:gavinmac wrote:Best wishes with the move, Andy. The story would probably made a good article for the newly relaunched front page if you are so inclined.
Happy to do that, but is it wise to have an article about getting disillusioned and leaving Cambodia on the front page?

Eh? Like Blighy is a step up?andyinasia wrote:Well I've hit seven years and have cracked. I'm giving up on higher education in Cambodia and Cambodia itself. To be fair, it was the wife who initiated the big decision; I'd have spent the next few years going quietly crazy otherwise. I'm outta here this weekend, back to shitty old Blighty.
Yes, the UK is a massive step up from Cambodia. Make that Humongous.
Well, IMO the NHS is fantastic, and the benefits system reassuring. But unless you have decent money, the UK is no fun. £10 for a walking-distance taxi, £3-4+ for a pint of beer. 2 currys and a few drinks £100. Shit, the council tax on a shitty flat would pay your rent on a pad out in Cambo.
But like I mentioned, that safety net is there.

Great article KIR. I did find it a bit disappointing that there weren't some ESL teachers who thought they were making a difference. Hopefully there are, they just haven't posted. Or possibly I'm being a bit naive.

Out in the boonies where you're the only white face and English speaker you will certainly feel that you're making a difference. In the city with its language factories with teachers in and out on a conveyor belt, changing classes every few weeks, it's just not the same.Kpal wrote:Great article KIR. Andy, all the best, but you wont last, once you've seen the world blighty is just a small little island that has unfortunately gone down the shitter.
If you want to protect your hd's use truecrypt (www.truecrypt.com) it's free and very well maintained and don't do what I did, let those tossers at the airport use an device that scans for drugs near your hard disks, it wiped 4terabytes worth of hd's (they were perfectly fine, just wiped) apparently they did not know it wipes hds...
Oh yeah, if they catch you with porn coming in (hmmm) you will get done, so use truecrypt.

AWM - cheers for the tips - I took a look - damn it looks complicated for a simple non-geek like me.
But thinking this through, if I got stopped at customs and they wanted to have a look at what I've got in a hard drive, if everything is encrypted, wouldn't that make them MORE suspicious?

Main ways it seems to go wrong:
-Dating an instable woman (often bargirl)
-Alcoholism & general poor health
-Bad investments & money management
-Getting too married and settled down that life loses its fun
These things aren't unique to Cambodia.

Very good khmeria, sort of sounds like me.
Had a very stable ex bar girl but I got bored living with peasants.
Very poor money management and barely working for four years.
Borderline alcoholic.
But because I didnt have to work in the system I could ignore the injustices.
Now cambodia is not the same place for me without my little family but I am bearing up.
A new woman with a different outlook,we are going to play golf tomorrow.
And I am old unlike andy and have my twilight years to look forward to.
I have had a very interesting life, much of it on the edge and I love my memories-those I can remember that is.

Don't worry about your hard drive. Has anyone on this board ever had customs check their hard drive? Only in the movies. Seriously, don't worry about it.

I know 2 people who were asked by customs for their laptops so they could be checked.
One said "I don't have one" and was then asked "Why not?". This was by Kiwi customs.
The other can tell it himself if he wants to. And it was another country.

Have an encrypted file with-in an encrypted file. Give them the password to the top level encryption, have all your files in that, then one file called financial data or something and have that encrypted with the stuff you don't anyone to see, a cursory glace won't spot it. Of course if they delve deeper... or perhaps upload to something like "a drive", in the cloud, depending how much you have to load and what sort of bandwidth you have access to.andyinasia wrote:AWM - cheers for the tips - I took a look - damn it looks complicated for a simple non-geek like me.
