'I agree Cambodia wont fall apart, not because it is more homogeneous'
It's not about race. It's about money and opportunities.Take either of the latter away, and you WILL have trouble.

agreed, no government , ( reds/yellows/Blues, ) cares about the south.SunSan wrote:They aren't making things that much better for the Muslims in the south. Without the iron fist of the military they'd have long ago voted themselves out of the Land of the Free.Phuket2006 wrote:I agree Cambodia wont fall apart, not because it is more homogeneous, ( SS words) BUT because HE will not allow any party to oppose him. Is that better or worse than what happens in Thailand where at least the Thai people are trying to make things better.
I spent those days ( May 18-21) at the Royal Hotel covering the riot. what went on at the university paled in comparison to what went on in the streets where blood ran alongside the Democracy Monument. I saw no bodies being burned in any parks or heard of that.
Military presence is having no effect at all in the south, Daily bombings and killings

Anyway, everyone knows that Cambodia is far from being a bastion of fairness and democracy, even short-term tourists usually get to see some grisly sites that make sure they leave knowing about horrific wide-spread violence in relatively recent times. I doubt it occurs much to many tourists to Thailand, they are often blissfully unaware that all might not be well in the land of shiny- happy-smiley people holding hands. So Thailand definitely has done a better PR job than Cambodia.

So far I prefer Thailand. Why?
- Better street food. MUCH better. And safer. Been getting sick a lot more since I've been in Cambo as I like to eat native.
- Nicer people. My experience. I'm sure other poeple may disagree in light of their own experiences. I have some good friends here (PP) but I'm talking in general.
- Far more honesty. One thing I am disliking about Cambodia is the bullshit. So far in my fairly extensive travels Cambodia ranks 2nd in the dishonesty scales. Vietnam being 1st. Again I think opinions will change for different people depending on your experiences.
- Better infrastructure. Nuff said.
- Much better parties. I'm getting on a bit now but was in the thick of the 90s rave scene in the UK and at heart I love a good mash up. Something Cambodia really lacks at the moment.
- Respect. In Thailand you have repsect and it is up to you to lose it. In Cambodia you are treated like shit until people know you are to be feared. Again I'm generalising but do I have this wrong? This is something I've picked up over the last 5 months of my being here but those of you who know the culture better than I do can maybe help me understand this a bit better. In Cambodia respect seems to be earned through fear whilst in Thailand the concept of respect revolves around station and deeds. Of course there is an aspect of fear in Thailand, as with anywhere, but nowhere near what I see in here in Cambo.
To temper this there are a few things that I prefer about Cambodia but these are far outweighed by the things that are winding me up day by day. I think my days are numbered here. Thailand is calling me again...

Shame you didn't expand. Both on what you have quoted and your response to it.Visser wrote:Yes.Eturnal Youf wrote: - Respect. In Thailand you have repsect and it is up to you to lose it. To be clear also, respect is a complex idea. I firmly believe that how you behave dictates your perception of how much respect you have in the eyes of other people in addition to, of course, how much you actually have.

Hmmm I don't know about this one. Ok i've never lived in Cambodia but in the last 11 years I must have spent 10 - 12 months here and I've spent probably 3+ years living and visiting Thailand. I think the people of Cambodia (in general) are by far more honest by a long way. I have lived Chiang Mai, Udon and Khon Kaen and spent at least a year on the islands. That's just me experience anyway.Eturnal Youf wrote:- Far more honesty. One thing I am disliking about Cambodia is the bullshit. Maybe I've been lucky in Thailand. Haven't really had any major issues there. Here it feels that I have to double check everything as people are always on the make. I think it might come down to having a nice base, or home, in Thailand with some fantastic people there. I just seem to get annoyed about the little things here more often.
Again, just my experience.

Never had a problem with that in either country, perhaps you have a delicate constitution?Eturnal Youf wrote:So far I prefer Thailand. Why?

I'd have to strongly disagree with all those points, from the revolting grimaces (smiles) up, I don't see Thais as nicer or more honest, and from what I could gather they don't respect anyone from outside their little corner of the world. I don't understand what you mean by earning respect through fear, Cambodians aren't scared of foreigners, and attacks on foreigners are extremely rare, unlike in Thailand. At the same time it's down to who you meet, and perhaps you have been luckier in Thailand, while I've been luckier here.

Could be true. It's funny that back in the UK I used to think I had a very varied diet. You know, any time you go to someone's house for dinner and they ask if there is aything you don't like. I've never said no to anything. But here in Cambodia that is being stretched quite a bithanky wrote:Never had a problem with that in either country, perhaps you have a delicate constitution?
With regards to the fear comment I'm not referring to Khmer - foreigner things. I mostly mean Khmer - Khmer interactions (as opposed to Thai - Thai relations). In my brief time here I've met both high end people who work within the gorvernent, own large corporations and have oodles of money, as well as people who don't really have a pot to piss in. Like most cultures thhere are the haves and the have-nots. the relationships here seem to be a bit different to those in Thailand.hanky wrote:I'd have to strongly disagree with all those points, from the revolting grimaces (smiles) up, I don't see Thais as nicer or more honest, and from what I could gather they don't respect anyone from outside their little corner of the world. Maybe I just have a lot to learn still? Very possible :p Sometimes it's diffilcult to explain those feelings of comfort and trust that you develop within your own environment over periods of time.
Score one for Thailand. I can walk no more than 100 meters in any direction and find a vending machine that dispenses clean, filtered (via reverse osmosis and UV treated) drinking water at one Baht ($0.03) per liter. I bring my 5 liter plastic jug and am set for drinking/cooking water for 15 US cents a fill up.
I have never seen one of these machines in Cambodia. And since you don't really use coins, any vending machine would have to take bills, which is always a hassle with so many poor quality notes passed around town there.
Last time I bought bottled water in PP, it cost me $5.00 for six 1.5 liter bottles (at the Royal Guesthouse). Probably costs even more by now.

It probably does, but then most people don't rely on guesthouses for their water supply.Soi Dog wrote:

I don't remeber water being much cheaper at the small market shops down the street either.hanky wrote:It probably does, but then most people don't rely on guesthouses for their water supply.Soi Dog wrote:

Various companies do a 20 litre bottle that costs $1 to refill. They'll even come around to your house and drop it off.Soi Dog wrote:Last time I bought bottled water in PP, it cost me $5.00 for six 1.5 liter bottles (at the Royal Guesthouse). Probably costs even more by now.
