Advice on a "the cops want money" situation
Hello everyone,
This afternoon a lady-friend of mine from when I used to live in PP called me to say that she had been caught with some form of contraband and was apparently being held by the police, who she says are asking for around $1,500 for her release. She even put a guy on the phone who spoke with me in Khmer, which was then confirmed in English by the girl: unless they get the money in two days, she says she is going to be hauled off to jail.
Part of me wants to immediately dismiss this as a ploy, but it seems so out of proportion to the standard money requests that this girl makes from time to time that I am a little bit worried. On the other hand, you can imagine all of the reasons to be doubtful.
Has anyone been in an actual pay-to-walk scenario in PP before? Does this seem like the standard order of business for something like that? If it's the real deal, what approach should I take to extending the "deadline," bringing down the price if possible, etc.? Is there some sort of informal loan person who will "put up bail" and then take payment later?
I obviously don't feel like forking over $1,500- mostly because I just don't have that kind of cash, literally- especially if this is all b.s. HOWEVER, I don't like the idea of this girl rotting in prison somewhere.
I feel ridiculous writing this, and no I'm not the type to respond to an African prince's bank account troubles, but I thought I would ask you all for any advice whatsoever, just to get a sense of perspective on what the f*** is going on. Any input, advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Agree. Change your phone number so she can't reach you anymore and forget about it.
Agree with BirdBrain. Move on.BirdBrain wrote:Pchum Ben just around the corner....
Let it go, its bullshit. She really wants the $1500 to buy some contraband.

If she is telling the truth and you pay up, there is the possibility that you'll be in all the Cambodian papers and have your own thread here in a few days time.
Dictated to a slave and sent by carrier pigeon.
If the post is to be taken seriously the circumstances surrounding your introduction and interaction with this lady need to be expanded in order to have a properly considered answered provided, you need to supply more into:
In what way was she your lady friend and for how long did she hold this position?
How long were you in Camb?
How long were you in PP?
When did you leave?
What country do you now live in and is it easy for you to jump on a plane to sort this out in person?
What makes you believe it was a Cop and how did you verify this ?
Where you working as an expat in Camb or simply doing the Bars when you met this woman?.
OK - the questions might seem a bit deep, but bare with me:
If you met her in a bar and you were here to 3 weeks, well,,,, you are being sucked.
In other words more info = better answers.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

You shouldn't make light of the situation; She could end up doing some hard time.BirdBrain wrote:I heard she was arrested for receiving swollen goods. The judge handed down a very stiff sentence. It could have been a dildo. That's a serious offense

AFAIC, if a friend is doing something illegal and gets caught knowing full well what they are doing is illegal and the consequences, then it's their own fault, and not my problem. Visit them maybe, give a bit of cash but to put $1500 I cant afford up for bail, no. Any smart criminal in a society where you can pay to get out should have their own emergency fund anyway.
There comes a limit to what you should do for other people who have fucked up. Time, crime etc.

Take it easy baby, take it as it comes...
ask your lady friend to call a friend of her and bring you to the police station. make sure you see the lady friend you mentioned is being held up in the station, DO NOT pass the money to any tomdickharry she told you to.
Is she raising your child?
If not just walk away, if so pick up the kid and walk away....

As Scoffer pointed out, we know so little about the situation. But I'm inclined to stay as far away from police matters as is humanly possible. Should you answer her call again, tell her outright you don't have that kind of money and she should know that -- I assume, as you readily admit to us. So it is the truth. Or if you really want to help her, tell her you've only $xxx. The police will have to be satisfied with that. It may work.
Another angle: if it happened to a longtime buddy, I assume you would help him. Does she rank as high as that? But again, what is she accused of? Would it be serious enough to cause you to end the "relationship" whether longtime buddy or "lady friend"?
Last, in Thailand $1500 is about 45,000 baht, which would rank the bribe in the near serious crime level. I'm not liking this scenario.
