Flooding update
Here's roughly the same view taken from Google Earth. Phnom Penh is under the search box arrow in the high top left of the picture.
Supposition, but from the look of the land it seems like flooding could be a regular occurrence there.
Fair point - and this year's an awful lot worse than most.
The imagery date in the Google shot is 06/04/2006 - so it's either April or June, neither of which are really rainy season. Can see the water features on the ground, there.

Great posts SunSan For those of us that don't go to Cambodia in the late summer or fall we never see this flooding.
Thanks also to the "Map Man" - a great service he has provided over the years.

If I knew for certain that a person was coming to my house with the intent of doing me good, I would run for my life HDT

I’m not sure about the rainfall data but the weekly flood situation reports from the MRC are pretty interesting, e.g. the latest one here for PP:vladimir wrote:How much rain have we had in Phnom Penh this year?
Seems that while the peak levels were about the same as the big flood in 2000 the duration this year has been a lot shorter, which may explain why there’s (apparently) been less deaths and less damage. Readings of rainfall and water levels at particular stations show only a small part of the story unfortunately -- e.g. the flood levels and damage in Siem Reap town have been much much worse than in 2000 because of rapid development and other factors.
The problem is getting any kind of reliable local information. Even for Siem Reap, all you get on most sites are fucking douchebags going on about how much the Khmers love the flooding, look at all the little brown kids playing in the water, everything’s just wonderful, and so on (e.g. countless pages of this bunk on TripAdvisor, half of which eventually turned out to be written by some fraud touting his own backpacker joint near the river).
Until this year’s floods I never had any use for Twitter, but aside from the Siem Reap expat page on Facebook and LTO’s blog it’s been by far the best source of news and info.
Udong’s up the Tonle Sap and that photo's up the Mekong but yeah, very similar landscape with the old meanders and oxbows etc. and prone to flooding even at the best of times I’d guess.SunSan wrote:Udong is always an island in the rainy season, agree.

When I crossed over Neak Leung last year it appeared a bridge is under construction. Rumour circulating around at that time was it will finished by this year, I guess not.

Yes, it's being built but I read in the papers it'll take 3 years at least.flying chicken wrote:When I crossed over Neak Leung last year it appeared a bridge is under construction. Rumour circulating around at that time was it will finished by this year, I guess not.
The ferries are usually quite efficient, they use two but there's a third one on standby.
I've never waited longer than 10 minutes.
By the way, with the road nearly finished right into Chbar Ampov it now only takes 3 hours to Bavet by bus.

How is your fundraising/emergency aid project going, SS?
I came, I argued, I'm out
Too busy to do anything. Anyway, now comes the hard part, getting money in.
We have decided to concentrate on that village though.

For me, Neak Leoung is most annoying part of my trips especially during the peak hours. If you are the driver, not only will you have to for ferry fee but also the patrol man if you want to get through faster, yea and sellers.

Yep. It ain't much though. 7000 for the ferry? 10 000 if you want to be first in line?
I never have problems.
What has become damn expensive is the Mekong 'lobster' on the other side though! Can't get them for under 20USD/kg!
