Flooding update
Anyone have a website URL that monitors flood levels and impact near Phnom Penh?
ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
The mekong river commission has a good website with reports from measuring stations all over the country plus a good weather forecast.
Ive been reading it for a week or so and watching the water rise by 50 to 80 mm a day at phnom penh port and south of srok sa ang on the bassac.
It is dire everywhere and going to get worse with the cyclone heading across vietnam and the south west monsoon strong.
My GF told me 5 weeks ago that the family rice crop was gone in kompong cham and the ex told me the other day that our block was under water down the bassac-first time in 25 years.
Im surprised that the floods dont get much of a mention on 440,either most members are city slickers or dont have khmer families in the bush.
I feel the impact of the floods and feel deeply for the khmers affected, particularly as many will have lost their rice crops.
Dengue fever will be the other by product no doubt.
If phnom penh gets inundated it will be a disaster with patrons struggling to get to hostess bars of an evening.

Just watching VTV. Lots of activity there, preparing for the coming typhoon and flooding that is sure to follow. Lots of shots of Vietnamese soldiers building earthen berms, filling and piling sandbags, etc., etc. Villagers and soldiers working in brigades to create barriers to the waters that are on the way.
And here in Cambodia, what? Has the army been mobilized to prepare for the rising water? The police out warning residents in danger areas and helping to evacuate the most vulnerable? Any sandbags being filled and piled (except for shop and home owners doing it for their own little place.) Is the government doing anything to prepare for this besides readying their pleas for foreign aid once the damage is done?
I see on CTN that the highest Cambodian government officials are spending their day today giving rice to the monks and burning incense for dead ancestors. Maybe this'll help stave off the disaster, eh?

i checked the river (the Tonle Sap)this morning and afternoon and it ain't as high as yesterday which you can tell by the green debris water mark. It 's also nowhere near as high as it was in 2000 and 2001,although this may change. Every year it floods in the countryside, it's nothing remarkable other than the number of children who drown why don't they learn to swim I never get it. If you are an NGO here's some really useful stuff you could teach: learn to float, swim and give basic resuscitation.
Don't want to appear cold but I've been here a long time time and have grown kind of insensitive.

Here are some pics from late this afternoon.
This is from about 100 yards north of Chatamuk Theater and the river is clearly high.
Closer...and a matter of inches from spilling over.
But further north, about across from the old Cali 2 it wasn't so bad.
But once I got to just across from Bouganvillier it was lapping the steps again.

Your pics clearly show what i was taking about - the green debris water mark- and if it starts to come over further down well that would be Diamond Island, which is probably divine retribution.

I can see what you mean, but if the water had been that 6" higher, wouldn't it have been over the top at the step in picture 2?horace wrote:Your pics clearly show what i was taking about - the green debris water mark...

Surely the green stuff could just be up there on account of the wake from a boat?Chuangt2u wrote:I can see what you mean, but if the water had been that 6" higher, wouldn't it have been over the top at the step in picture 2?horace wrote:Your pics clearly show what i was taking about - the green debris water mark...

LTO, my thoughts exactly. I now have most of the Klan staying with me, as their house in Chbar Ampoeul is flooded up to the 1st floor. The media coverage reminds me of South African coverage in the bad old days, report everything except domestic problems, maybe they'll just go away and no one will notice.LTO wrote:Just watching VTV. They just announced a $55 million flood relief program yesterday, they said there would be problems implementing it effectively though because everyone was on holiday...vladimir wrote: The media coverage reminds me of South African coverage in the bad old days, report everything except domestic problems, maybe they'll just go away and no one will notice.
There is hardly any boat activity around there, I doubt the odd splash from one of those Vietnamese canoes would make much difference.Surely the green stuff could just be up there on account of the wake from a boat?
What wind and waves? There's barely any of either in that river.I think wind and wave movement accounts for a lot.
Anyway, no big worries because a local friend informed me that it's just a "Buddhist thing" and all the water would subside after Pchum Benh.

Just checked the Mekong River Commission site, they have weekly updates up to week ending 18th September, nothing later. I guess natural disasters take holidays or get paid OT.
The flooding has brought out lots of giant centipedes near the in-laws place, but the locals are all catching fish on their doorsteps, so there are some positive points.

actually last two years were very dry and most will be aware that this year's flooding is more widespread than normal.horace wrote:You were under water last year and the year before and again and again get used to it, or go back to when you came from.
It is worthy of discussion and information as some people have family, assets, businesses etc here and need to know the state of things in relation to flooding. We need to keep an eye on it every year. Sharing information is an important component of fulfilling duties of care.
