is it safe to travel alone in cambodia?
I am a chines girl. I was planning on coming to Cambodia for a vacation at the end of this month with a friend. However, my friend couldn't make the trip with me and all the plane tickets and hotel are already paid and couldn't get refund. With such a sudden change of the plan, I am sort of got stuck in this situation now.
I am wondering if it's safe for me to travel inside Cambodia by myself? My original plan was to spend a few days in Phnom Penh and then head to Sihanoukville to enjoy some beach time.
Thanks a lot for your advice in advance.
Michelle

You should be fine, just be smart about what you do and where you go. Would I recommend that you wander the streets alone at night? No. Are you going to be kidnapped in broad daylight while walking along the riverside in Phnom Penh? Probably not.
[edit] Also, it's fairly easy to meet other travelers at the guest houses. When I first came out here I had met 2 or 3 people to spend time with within hours of my arrival.

I was told there would be cake.

There are many all over the city. It can vary a lot depending on how much you want to spend and what kind of place you want. You'll probably want to look around BKK 1 and the Riverside area. What sort of price range do you have in mind? Do you want a hostel style room that is shared with other people or a private room?

Stay just off the riverside.

I assume you would like a place where you can meet other travelers? There are lots of places listed on hostelworld. Or if you'd prefer something more like a hotel, you can look on agoda. Some other people here might be able to recommend specific places for you.

OK Guest House, between the Independence Monument and the palace. Rock bottom prices (I think), lots of back packers.
Or try the whole Street 172 scene.

I like Waterview Guesthouse. It is near the old market on the river. $15 rooms, very nice Khmer/Chinese owner.

I don't know Phnom Penh but in Sihanoukville (snooky) you should be fine walking round alone within the main area of the town and beaches. If you go to Otres beach for the peace and quiet the travelling there or to town should be done in daylight hours but I know of no incidents lately, but just best to be cautious. Do not carry loose bags over your arms or better still do not carry your valuables cards and passports in them, bag snatchers still exist but are opportunists and they look for easy pickings. Guest houses here where you will certainly meet like minded folk and travellers are 'Monkey Republic' (best to book ahead for this place, very popular) or if you on tight budget but want to mingle and party then try Utopia. Saying that most of the better guest houses can arrange transport (recommended tuk tuks) for you day and night so you will be extremely unluck to get any problems.
Good luck and have great stay!

If you want to meet other travelers, check out street 258. That's where OK Guesthouse is that Sun San recommended. Lazy Gecko is a good place to meet other travelers as well.
It's fine for a woman to travel in Cambodia alone. I travel here alone all the time, and I have met many other women that travel alone here. As another poster suggested, just be smart. Don't wander around late at night by yourself, especially if you've been drinking. But that's advice to follow anywhere, not just Cambodia.

I generally feel safer on the streets of Phnom Penh by myself late at night than I do in the city streets of Melbourne. Here you're much less likely to run into some fuckwit with some inflated, beer driven ego who wants to bash you to look cool in front of his mates. I like to think that if you get bashed by one of the locals here then you probably deserved it.
