Battambang flood disaster
Battambang flood disaster
Went round several districts of Battambang the last few days, by powerboat.
Basically they were a huge inland sea, as far as the eye could see.
We travelled an hour at a time between sightings of land. Nothing but treetops & rooftops.
Lots of kids coming down with waterborne diseases such as diarrhea & fevers - 60 with severe diarrhea at Ta Phon commune a couple of days ago.
Malnutrition is setting in, & will likely be followed by epidemics IMO.
My NGO (CWARS) is hiring 20 powerboats a day to deliver food, water & meds to the 4 communes we have some funding for - but most people haven't received any aid, & are just waiting there in the mud under pieces of plastic.

Flying into PP today and seeing the flooding from the sky was unreal. It looked like a bloody ocean... There were a bunch of Canadian-Khmers on the flight that were pretty upset looking it it from above.

Imagine rates of cholera will rise dramatically as well as water born diseases + dengue + malaria, serious disaster in the making, there's a big splash in the international press about the flooding disaster in Thailand but little old Cambodia isn't making the headlines as much and it needs more help.
Yes it seems to be all Thailand, CNN is concentrating on Modern Day Slavery for Cambodia (there are some really sick people around)
Just to update:
Our medical teams report that the waterborne diseases are increasing a lot now. Mainly severe diarrhea, skin infections, fevers and pneumonia.
The team at Roka village yesterday treated 32 children and 25 adults with these complaints.
The Tonle Sap has fallen only 3cm in 8 days, so this probably won't end soon.

The areas he has been referring to are on the Tonle Sap Lake side of Battambang in Sangkae district, and the other badly hit reported areas were in Moung Russei.badboybubby wrote:Rob...what's the area like around Phnom Sampeau?
Phnom Sampeau isn't bad as they are still taking tourists down there.
Dictated to a slave and sent by carrier pigeon.

Only ones I took from the boat.khmerhit wrote:have you any aerial photos of the flooding?
I can't see a way of posting them here - any clues?
Upload to a hosting site such as imageshack.com or flickr.com. (Means you have to put the pics on the internet first).
