http://news.msn.co.nz/worldnews/8403122 ... -frenchmanCambodian police have found five bodies, two of them stuffed in a suitcase, in a car belonging to a Frenchman who had been missing for months with his four children, officials said.
The gruesome discovery was made after the vehicle owned by widower Laurent Vallier, 42, was retrieved from a pond on his property in the southern province of Kampong Speu, said Chhay Sinarith, director of the interior ministry's internal security department.
"After removing the car from the pond, we found the remains of five people. We conclude that they are those of the missing French family," he told AFP.
"The bones of two kids were put in a suitcase that was also in the car," he said, adding that police were still investigating the cause of death for all five victims.
Vallier and his two sons and two daughters, aged two to nine, had been missing since September. Vallier's Cambodian wife died in childbirth in 2009.
A source at the French embassy in Phnom Penh told AFP he could only confirm that "the remains of five people", in a badly decomposed state, had been found in Vallier's car, which is thought to have lain submerged for weeks.
The embassy official stressed that none of the victims had been officially identified and that an investigation was still ongoing.

Terrible news. I met him and his wife back when they had just had their first baby in Kep. Ran across him a few times after that, but haven't seen them in years. I'd like to know what happened.

In the UK, people would instantly presume murder/suicide in a case like this. In Cambodia, I'm not so sure.LTO wrote:Terrible news. That occurred to me too. I hate to speculate to much without more facts, but taking the time and going through the process of stuffing your dead children into a suitcase doesn't seem part of the usual murder-suicide scenario.
so what could it be if not suicide or murder? an accident?

I noticed that story on Koh Santepheap about a month ago, I'm sorry to hear such a grim outcome.

'Murder/suicide' means the murderer then tops himself and usually at the scene.krisduncs wrote:so what could it be if not suicide or murder? an accident?

It's hard, though of course not impossible, to kill yourself and put your own body in a submerged vehicle. I mean, you could kill your family and then tie yourself to the steering wheel and drive into the pond. It's unusual though.keeping_it_riel wrote:'Murder/suicide' means the murderer then tops himself and usually at the scene.krisduncs wrote:so what could it be if not suicide or murder? an accident?
The bodies in suitcase suggests that perhaps it was just a murder originally and he was preparing to dispose of the bodies, then he decided to kill himself.
I note that his Cambodian wife died in childbirth. That's sad, but it's a reminder that Westerners really should break the bank and see that their wives are getting the best possible care during childbirth.

Just a hypothesis, but suppose he killed his kids out of despair/madness, put their bodies in the car then drank a couple of bottles of pastis, took tranx/sleepers and jumped in the car before driving it into the pond to deliberately drown himself. That doesn't sound impossible to me. Have you seen the first ten minutes of the film 'Walkabout' ? It features a car and an attempted murder/suicide.gavinmac wrote:It's hard, though of course not impossible, to kill yourself and put your own body in a submerged vehicle. Of course, all five of them could have been murdered by someone else.

Suicide by drowning is a tough way to go. I think the body will naturally try to get out of the car when you start drowning. Tying yourself to the wheel would prevent that.
And being drunk/stoned wouldn't prevent you from escaping a submerged car either. Just ask Ted Kennedy.

Oh this is terrible news.
I read that he and the kids were missing and now this.
And the news that the wife died in childbirth-obviously he had no money for professional care....
Bugger.

I wouldn't say that's obvious. It's possible she got good care and still died. It's also possible that he had the money but chose not to spend it on good care. He had a car and land, apparently.ken svay wrote: And the news that the wife died in childbirth-obviously he had no money for professional care....
