I just called the ANZ Bank as I have a portion of my salary paid into an ANZ account every month for over 4 years.
They said yes it is true; the minimum is going up from $50 to $500 in the coming month for all customers. They could not give me an exact date. New accounts can only be opened with a $500 minimum payment. Old accounts would also be changing to the $500 minimum; if you have less than $500 in your account at any time then you will be charged. She could not tell me what those charges will be.
She did say that this would not apply to payroll accounts. I’m not entirely sure what is meant by this?
I know plenty of Khmer’s that put their money in ANZ and they don’t even get paid $500 a month, I wonder how this will affect them…..
I will be closing my account next week

Hmmmmm... I have been thinking about changing my ANZ account for a while. Hopefully this thread will be the kick up the arse I need to actually do something about it. The question is, where to go now?

For everyday banking-acleda.
ATMs all over the country and good service.

When I was opening an account with Acleda (only bank in town until recently) I couldn't even get them to accept that the two example signatures I did were close enough. No, I had to keep signing until I had two exactly identical signatures. After my third failed attempt they pulled out the ink pad. I got that wrong too! I assumed that because I was left handed they would need my left thumb print! So took two goes to get the thumb print correct as well as the three rejected signatures.cambod wrote:
What I didn't like was how picky they were/are about the signature. If someone has my passbook, looks somewhat like me, and could forge my sig they could clear me out.... They don't ask for id for withdraws, wtf? Just check the sig/pic. I was ok with that UNTIL they were trying to get me to sign my slip for the THIRD time because it was way off, so they showed me what it was supposed to look like! ? ! ? I told them how illogical that was, but don't think they got it...
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

I've got accounts at ACLEDA and Cambodia Public Bank and am happy enough with them.
Others have asked about the opening account/minimum balance/charging policies of other banks - important issues that I don't have the answers to, but I hope others come on board and inform us - either in this thread or better in the Essential Information forum/Banks thread.

I came, I argued, I'm out
My main priority would be a bank that can offer me a debit (not credit) card that I can use in the foreign countries like Singapore or Japan.

I believe ABA can provide a Visa debit (not the credit card that requires a minimum balance equal to the limit of the card).

I got my Cambodia Public Bank account through work so didn't have to have a minimum balance. However, I opted to also get the debit card (accepted internationally) with the account. At the time (2010) it meant $12 annual fee for the luxury of the debit card, plus I had to have a minimum of $20 (I think! It MAY have been $50) in the account IF I wanted to be able to use the debit card. I didn't have to have that amount in if I just wanted to withdraw $20.
The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.

Sounds like exactly what I am looking for. Never heard of ABA until today. Anybody had good or bad experiences with them?
I have heard of CPB on the other hand so I will try to pop in and see what they have to offer.
Thanks 1984 and Violet for the tips.

ABA is on Sihanouk Bvd next to Lucky - I've only heard good reports. Not sure if they have any ATMs though. Only downside to CamPu Bank is the shortage of ATMs in convenient locations.Hemingway wrote:Sounds like exactly what I am looking for. Never heard of ABA until today. ABA has branches on Sihanouk, Monivong, Mao Tse Toung, Stade Chas, Teuk Thla, Toul Kork & Borei Keyla in Phnom Penh plus a few other ATMs around town on riverside etc. and also branches in Siem Reap, Battambang and Kampong Cham.
We discussed their various accounts available on some other threads and it seems quite a few board members also have accounts. I have a flexible deposit account and a visa card both of which have been good for me so far.

I had bad experiences about three years ago with ANZ (Lost international transfers, Debit card not working online or in some foreign ATM's, ghost/double service charges appearing on my account, shitty customer service, etc). So I closed my account and moved to SBC - ANZ of course invented a bunch of new charges for closing the account, much more than their published closing costs.
To date, SBC have been really good, very professional. One big plus is their debit card can be used online, having a proper CV2 number. They have a great mobile service where your get a SMS if you withdraw from an ATM - tells you how much you took out, and the balance remaining. You can do the same for all outgoings on the account, which is good if you make online payments etc. They pay interest on accounts and have a professional pleasant service.

Just to reiterate ANZ Royal Bank http://www.anzroyal.com staff has no qualms about misrepresenting or lying to you in order to steal/cheat you out of money.
Just heard a story from a 18 year Cambodian student who tried to open an account with them because he thought it make money transfers from friends in Australia easy or cheaper. Big Mistaske!
The ANZ Royal Bank staff told him it was simple, all he would need to do is make an initial deposit of $100.
He reviewed the policies which told him about the "required $50 minimum" balance, and signed up on the spot.
Two hours later he gets a phone call from the helpful ANZ Royal Bank staff (scam artists) who proceed to tell him about the problem with his account;
"your account does not meet our 'required $500 minimum' balance."
"you have two options- 1. deposit $400 dollars in your account today or
2. come in and close your account, of course we will have to charge you a $20 service fee
for all the paperwork you made us do. "
Being the typical 18 year old Cambodian student, making the $400 deposit was not really an option for him.
So, on his first attempt to open his very own bank account in his life, he finds himself screwed out of $20 in 2 short hours.
