All night dogs and bad habits
What is it with dogs here... at least in this location dogs go berserk (there are many of them) all day every day. All night every night. Just can't get any undisturbed sleep. The racket during the day (all day long) seriously pisses me off (awake and up now at 3am, last night it was 1am). No-one else seems to be troubled by it. As I write the loud barking and howling is CONSTANT by several of the monsters. Everybody must be death here. I don't hate dogs but this is insane.
Last November (when GF was in Oz) I bought her a small lightweight laptop so she could easily remain in touch during her travels to provincial towns and other countries in SEA (her work). But one month later the machine is loaded up with games (by other family members) and the space bar is fucked (keys often get abused when kids play games). Told her that is not the purpose of the laptop and uninstalled everything. No doubt they will have re-appeared next visit.
Immediately after she bought her car a few weeks ago, everybody else in the family wants to borrow it. They were told it's 50/50 with me (not true) so she cannot allow that. But the point is, always some excuse is needed. I filled up the fuel tank on Saturday, but when we came back from Siem Reap (by bus) the tank was half empty. The (adopted) daughter took it for a drive, doesn't even have a license. Guess who will NOT be filling it again...
The sister issue remains unresolved, nothing has changed,
Khmers don't know the word "NO"? Where is their sense or property?
PS
Right now I feel like running outside and strangling all the monsters... constant racket (4am)!!!

i find that the dogs stop barking about 5 minutes before the chickens start squawking and crowing
My next door neighbor lets his dog out at 6:00 AM every morning (use to be 5AM for months) and the dog goes up to their gate and barks and growls at everything that walks by or makes a movement.
The other neighbors have dogs that bark only when you are really tired and they can feel it. What baffles me is that the owners don't care, the other Khmer neighbor's don't seem to care.
One of my neighbors across the street a few months back decided owning a rooster was a good idea. I am pretty sure it was one of the fighting ones, since that noise only lasted a week, non stop, which means he either lost the fight and was dinner or they sold it.

Don't mind the roosters. The back neighbour's dog here is the worst offender, it appears to be running loose 25/7. Barks the hell at anyone and anything that passes, it has claimed the entire street as it's territory. Whenever there's nothing to bark at, it howls.
It parades the street up and down and sets off all other dogs behind gates.
Of course neighbours won't do or say anything about others bad behaviour, it's "up to them".
Which explains a lot about Cambodia.
You're lucky it's just dogs at 5 or 6:00am, usually it's loud cha-cha-cha music to clean the car or moto by.

Neighbours are like governments.
People deserve the ones they get.
Say/do something or live with it. Not trying to be callous to the OP, but keeping quiet/ doing as the Romans do will get you nowhere. My suggestion is speak to the owner nicely, you might be surprised at the results. Most of them are not even consciously aware of noise. If 'nice' fails, you might have to get nasty and start throwing things at the dog or shouting loudly at 3am - you can bet they will hear that.Last ditch, suggest a muzzle.
Moron in my block started with the electric drill at 5.30am on Sunday. I said something nicely a little later.
'Did you hear that crazy person using a drill early this morning? Who was it? I think some people haven't been to school.'
Quiet as a mouse, only drilling after 930am from then on.

You might find this interesting http://barkingdogs.net/soundremoteneighbor.shtml
Personally I use a noise cancelling headset similar to:
http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/bose ... ontentBody
Gets rid of 90% of the unwanted noise and completely if you play music, even at low level. Of course wearing a headset is not allways convenient but does give you some control. I find earplugs utterly useless as far as barking dogs are concerned. I have not tried the ultrasonic dog silencers mentioned in the first url, but I am considering this option.

Or you could do what Thais do, pay some guy to poison it. If the dog is running free, he might not last long if the dog retaurants are short of meat...
Pharmacie de la Gare sell Quies earplugs, cuts most noise, about $5/ 3 sets. These are by far the best I have found,

As far as your family go - well, that's family, innit? One of THE key criteria when considering marrying my wife was checking if the family passed muster - if they'd given me the impression of being interfering or money-grabbing types, I'd have been outta there.
As for the dogs - that is my 'pet' hate. I love my family but hate staying overnight with them out in the boonies because I can never sleep a wink due to the combination of the neighbourhood dogs and the mozzies. It didn't used to be like this - especially in the city. This was one of the biggest contrasts I noticed when I relocated to Cambodia from Thailand 7 years ago. There, due to the king being a dog-lover, no one can harm a dog; therefore, every town and village has a population of mangy feral and soi dogs making a racket all night. In Cambodia it was so different - anyone who acquired a dog ran a real risk of it being dognapped and eaten, so they'd keep them inside and quiet. Why has this changed? Why aren't the dogs in the city at least stolen and chopped for the Vietnamese pot any more?

I came, I argued, I'm out
Even In the colder nights I keep my windows shut and use the A/C, I also got the landlady to replace the curtains with very thick ones so it is really dark, I have no problem sleeping.

If it's really bad and you want to stay in the apartment, consider double-glazing, ask the landlord to go 50%, he might even solve the problem for you when $ is involved.

In my home town I did exactly that (after talking nicely and later complaining to council had no effect). The problem was very serious (2 dogs from same owner across the street) and when all else failed I started barking back (yelling "shut up" every time including in the middle of the night across the street). I was not popular but the owner and dogs moved out eventually (I overheard the owner say "he freaks me out").vladimir wrote:Neighbours are like governments.

Here, GF doesn't even want to talk to these same people on other matters like them placing their smelly garbage bags in front of her gate. They are not nice people.
I don't speak Khmer and again, for now I am just a visitor. Several households here have 4 dogs.
I am also reluctant to complain when I may have to give a dog a wrapped up sleeping pill sometime... it's not a good idea to be a suspect. Certainly not in Oz. And I wouldn't even tell GF or wify (as the case may be).
In Oz, talking nicely or complaining to dog owners usually does not help or is only a short-term remedy. If they were reasonable people there wouldn't be a problem in the first place.
